b. to hint
El jefe de policía insinua que tienen un posible sospechoso.The chief of police is hinting that they have a possible suspect.
c. to imply
Pedro insinuó que sabía lo que estábamos haciendo.Pedro implied that he knew what we were doing.
d. to suggest
¿Qué insinúas? Claro que quiero a mi marido.What are you suggesting? Of course I love my husband.
e. to insinuate (something unpleasant)
Gloria insinuó que yo tenía la culpa de su fracaso.Gloria insinuated that I was to blame for her failure.
insinuarse
A pronominal verb always uses a reflexive pronoun. (e.g. Te ves cansado.).
2. (to flirt)
a. to make advances
Daniela se sintió incómoda en la fiesta porque Pedro se le insinuó.Daniela felt uncomfortable at the party because Pedro made advances to her.
b. to make a pass (colloquial)
A word or phrase that is commonly used in conversational speech (e.g. skinny, grandma).
No sé si ese chico se me estaba insinuando.I don't know whether that boy was making a pass at me.
3. (literary) (to appear gradually)
A word or phrase restricted in usage to literature or established writing (e.g. sex, once upon a time).
a. to emerge
En su rostro se insinuaba una mirada de preocupación.A look of concern emerged on her face.
b. to become apparent
Empiezan a insinuarse ciertas tensiones entre el jefe y los empleados.Certain tensions are becoming apparent between the boss and staff.
c. to creep in
Creo que la intolerancia está insinuándose en nuestra sociedad.I think intolerance is creeping into our society.
