An intransitive verb is one that does not require a direct object (e.g. The man sneezed.).
1. (to regard with suspicion; used with "de")
a. to not trust
No te preocupes, no eres solo tú. Ella desconfía de todo el mundo.Don't worry; it's not just you. She doesn't trust anybody.
b. to be suspicious of
Debo admitir que en un principio desconfié de sus intenciones.I must admit I felt suspicious of her intentions at first.
c. to mistrust
Que yo sepa, no te ha dado motivos para que desconfíes de él.As far as I know, he hasn't given you any reason for you to mistrust him.
d. to distrust
Yo desconfiaría de un tatuador que no tuvieran ningún tatuaje.I'd distrust any tattoo artist who had no tattoos.
2. (to feel uncertain about; used with "de")
a. to doubt whether
Desconfiamos de poder recaudar fondos para el proyecto.We doubt whether we'll be able to raise funds for the project.
b. to be doubtful whether
A este paso, desconfío de que lleguemos antes del anochecer.At this pace, I'm doubtful whether we'll get there before dark.
3. (to feel insecure about; used with "de")
a. to doubt
No hay nada peor que empezar a desconfiar de tu propio criterio.There's nothing worse than to start doubting your own judgment.
b. to have no faith in
Sus padres desconfían de su capacidad para dirigir la empresa familiar.His parents have no faith in his ability to manage the family business.
c. to lack confidence in
Desconfían de sus propias posibilidades de ganar las elecciones.They lack confidence in their chances of winning the election.
