1. (to explain)
a. to clear up
Los detectives todavía no pudieron esclarecer el misterio del sepulturero desaparecido.The detectives still can't clear up the mystery of the missing gravedigger.
b. to clarify
El político tuvo que dar una conferencia de prensa para esclarecer sus dichos.The politician had to hold a press conference to clarify what he had said.
c. to elucidate
El cómplice esclareció cuál fue su rol en el robo al banco.The accessory to the crime elucidated his role in the bank robbery.
d. to shed light on
A phrase used as a figure of speech or a word that is symbolic in meaning; metaphorical (e.g. carrot, bean).
(figurative)
Virginia vio lo que pasó y puede esclarecer el asunto.Virginia saw what happened and might be able to shed light on the issue.
2. (to brighten)
a. to light up
La luna esclarecía las calles vacías.The moon lit up the empty streets.
b. to illuminate
No veíamos en la oscuridad, pero afortunadamente Manuel esclareció la senda con su linterna.We couldn't see in the dark, but thankfully Manuel illuminated the path with his flashlight.
An intransitive verb is one that does not require a direct object (e.g. The man sneezed.).
3. (to begin to become light)
a. to dawn
Es peligroso caminar por el bosque durante la noche. Esperemos hasta que esclarezca.It's dangerous to walk in the forest at night. Let's wait until it dawns.
