1. (legal)
a. to transfer
La anciana decidió enajenar su casa a su hijo antes de morir.The old woman decided to transfer her house to her son before she died.
b. to dispose of
El juez dictaminó que el defraudador tenía que enajenar sus bienes.The judge ruled that the fraudster had to dispose of his assets.
c. to alienate (formal) (rights, land, property)
A word or phrase used to refer to the second person formal “usted” by their conjugation or implied context (e.g. usted).
Los titulares de tierras otorgadas por el rey tenían el libre derecho de enajenarlas.The holders of lands granted by the king had a free right to alienate them.
2. (to mentally unbalance)
a. to drive mad
El dolor estaba enajenando a Jaime y tuvo que tomarse varios calmantes.The pain was driving Jaime mad, so he had to take several painkillers.
3. (to entrance)
a. to enrapture
Cuando el artista reveló su cuadro, su belleza enajenó al público.When the artist unveiled his painting, the public was enraptured by its beauty.

A pronominal verb always uses a reflexive pronoun. (e.g. Te ves cansado.).
4. (to become mentally unbalanced)
a. to go out of one's mind
Cuando se somete a los prisioneros a torturas psicológicas prolongadas, terminan por enajenarse.If prisoners are subjected to prolonged psychological torture, they eventually go out of their minds.
b. to go mad
Como claustrofóbica, me enajenaría si me quedara encerrada en un ascensor.As a claustrophobic, I'd go mad if I got trapped in an elevator.
c. to become unhinged
La madre se enajenó cuando le informaron del accidente de su hijo.The mother became unhinged when she was informed of her son's accident.
5. (to become entranced)
a. to be enraptured
Los amantes del arte se enajenan con la belleza de Florencia.Art lovers are enraptured by the beauty of Florence.
b. to get carried away
El público se enajenó escuchando su ejecución exquisita del andante.The audience got carried away listening to her exquisite performance of the andante.
6. (to estrange oneself)
a. to alienate oneself
Con su comportamiento antisocial Marta se enajenó de sus amigos y colegas.With her antisocial behavior Marta alienated herself from friends and colleagues.
