A transitive verb is a verb that requires a direct object (e.g. I bought a book.).
1. (to compact)
a. to compress
Si comprimes demasiado un gas, se puede convertir en líquido.If you compress a gas too much, it can turn into a liquid.
b. to press
La enfermera comprimió la herida para evitar que el paciente perdiera sangre.The nurse pressed the wound so the patient didn't lose blood.
c. to squeeze
Hay que comprimir todas estas cosas juntas para que quepan en la mochila.We need to squeeze all these things together so they fit in the backpack.
2. (computing)
a. to compress
Necesitas comprimir la imagen antes de subirla.You need to compress the image before uploading it.
b. to zip
Este programa comprime los archivos grandes para que ocupen menos espacio de almacenamiento.This program zips large files so they use less storage.
3. (to repress)
a. to hold back
Gabriel comprimió sus sentimientos por mucho tiempo hasta que estalló.Gabriel held back his feelings for a long time until he finally couldn't take it anymore.
A pronominal verb always uses a reflexive pronoun. (e.g. Te ves cansado.).
4. (to squeeze)
a. to squash together
A word or phrase that is commonly used in conversational speech (e.g. skinny, grandma).
Todos nos comprimimos en un solo coche porque el mío se descompuso.We squashed together in only one car because mine broke down.
5. (to repress oneself)
a. to hold back
El psicólogo me dijo que es mejor expresar lo que sientes que comprimirse.My therapist told me that it's better to express what you feel than to hold back.
