A transitive verb is a verb that requires a direct object (e.g. I bought a book.).
1. (to argue)
a. to debate

b. to discuss

An intransitive verb is one that does not require a direct object (e.g. The man sneezed.).
2. (to hold a debate)

3. (to combat)
a. to struggle

b. to be torn

4. (to twist and turn)
a. to struggle

b. to writhe
El pobre hombre contenía la respiración, debatiéndose por mantenerse a flote.The poor man was holding his breath, writhing to stay afloat.
