transitive verb 1. (to deprive of light)
a. to darken Voy a apagar esta luz de acá para oscurecer un poco el cuarto. I'm going to turn off this light over here to darken the room a little bit.
El foco se fundió, oscureciendo la habitación. The light bulb burned out, darkening the room.
2. (to diminish)
a. to overshadow Él siempre oscurece los logros de su hermana por envidia. He always overshadows his sister's achievements out of envy.
3. (to bewilder)
a. to obscure La nueva información oscureció nuestro entendimiento del tema. The new information obscured our understanding of the topic.
b. to confuse Sus mentiras oscurecieron mi mente y no tomé la decisión correcta. His lies confused me, and I made the wrong decision.
c. to cloud Espero no oscurecer tu comprensión con tantos datos irrevelantes. I hope not to cloud your understanding with so many irrelevant details.

a. to shade El pintor oscureció el fondo para hacer resaltar el rostro. The painter shaded the background to make the face stand out.

a. to get dark En media hora va a empezar a oscurecer. In half an hour, it will begin to get dark.

A pronominal verb always uses a reflexive pronoun. (e.g. Te ves cansado.).

a. to darken Gritamos de miedo cuando se oscureció la habitación. We screamed out of fear when the room darkened.
7. (to become overcast)
a. to get darker Era un día soleado hasta que de pronto se cubrió el cielo de nubes y se oscureció. It was a sunny day until the sky suddenly filled with clouds and got darker.
b. to grow dark El cielo empezó a oscurecerse y supimos que habría una tormenta. The sky started to grow dark and we knew there would be a storm.
