1. (to damage)
a. to destroy

b. to smash
Estaba tan enojado que quería destrozar algo.I was so angry that I wanted to smash something.
c. to wreck
La compañía está destrozando los bosques.The company is wrecking the forests.
d. to ruin
Destrocé mi celular por haberlo mojado.I ruined my cell phone by getting it wet.
2. (to defeat morally)
a. to destroy
Averiguar que su novio estaba engañándola destrozó a Lucía por completo.Learning that her boyfriend was cheating on her destroyed Lucia completely.
b. to shatter
Con un comentario destrozaron mis ilusiones.With a single comment, they shattered my dreams.
c. to devastate
La noticia de la muerte de su mamá destrozó a Laura.The news of her mother's death devastated Laura.
d. to break
La esposa de Miguel le destrozó el corazón cuando le dijo que quería que se divorciaran.Miguel's wife broke his heart when she told him that she wanted a divorce.
e. to ruin

f. to crush
Descubrir que no había conseguido el papel que quería en la obra destrozó a mi hermana.My sister was crushed when she found out that she didn't get the part she wanted in the play.
destrozarse
A pronominal verb always uses a reflexive pronoun. (e.g. Te ves cansado.).
3. (to be damaged)
a. to be destroyed
En cuestión de minutos, el edificio se destrozó con la bola de demolición.The building was destroyed by the wrecking ball in a matter of minutes.
b. to smash
El florero se cayó de la mesa y se destrozó en mil pedazos.The vase fell from the table and it smashed into a thousand pieces.
c. to be ruined
Todos los muebles en el sótano se destrozaron por la inundación.All the furniture in the basement was ruined by the flood.
d. to fall apart
Vas a tener que comprar ropa nueva. Todo lo que tienes se está destrozando.You're going to have to buy new clothes. Everything you have is falling apart.
A reflexive verb is a verb that indicates that the subject performs an action on itself (e.g. Miguel se lava.).
4. (to harm's one's body)
a. to ruin
Si no dejas de beber tanto, vas a destrozarte el hígado.If you don't stop drinking so much, you're going to ruin your liver.
b. to damage
Se destrozó la pleura, porque se negó a dejar el cigarrillo.He damaged the lining of his lungs, because he refused to quit smoking.
