1. (to make shorter)
a. to shorten
Por motivos burocráticos, la universidad abrevió el plazo de entrega de las tesis.For bureaucratic reasons, the university shortened the deadline for thesis submission.
b. to cut short
La ministra abrevió su estancia en Bruselas para asistir a una reunión de gabinete urgente en su país.The minister cut short her stay in Brussels to attend an urgent cabinet meeting in her country.
c. to abridge (a text)
Hay que abreviar el texto porque tiene que caber en una sola página.We need to abridge the text because it has to fit on a single page.
d. to abbreviate (a word)
Al escribir mensajes de texto, es normal abreviar palabras.When texting, it is common to abbreviate words.

2. (to hasten)
a. to hurry up
Le dije que abreviara porque la película estaba a punto de empezar.I told him to hurry up because the movie was about to start.
b. to cut it short
O abreviamos o no acabamos nunca.If we don't cut it short, we'll never be done.
c. to be quick
Quise abreviar, pero solo conseguía equivocarme una y otra vez.I tried to be quick, but all I managed to do was to make one mistake after another.
3. (to summarize)

This refers to an idiomatic word or phrase for which there is no word-for-word translation.
