Weekend Subjunctive Practice 9: Alegrarse de que
¡Bienvenido a nuestro hilo! Each weekend, Cordobesa and I will present a different topic on everybodys favorite subject the subjunctive!
We will give an explanation of the topic, and a couple of examples.
Write sentences at least 5 words long. Write your Spanish sentence, and include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by Cordobesa in the comments section. Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.)
Post pictures if youd like, and dont forget to vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the topic as well as the number of votes.
¡Vamos allá!
Weekend Subjunctive Practice 9: Alegrarse de que
Explanation:
Just like with previous exercises, such as para que from Weekend Subjunctive Practice 2, when you have a change of subject, the subjunctive follows "alegrarse de que" which translates to to be glad that". In the first example below, I am the one who is glad that you are here. In the second example, the mother is the one who was glad that her son could attend college.
Examples:
Me alegro de que estés aquí.
I am glad that you are here.
La madre se alegraba de que su hijo pudiera asistir a la universidad.
The mother was glad that her son could attend college.
¡Prestad atención!
If there is not a change of subject, the conjugated form of alegrarse de is followed by the infinitive. Look at the above examples rewritten below using only one subject.
Example:
Me alegro de estar aquí.
I am glad to be here.
Se alegraba de poder asistir a la universidad.
He was glad to be able to attend college.
¿Entendéis la diferencia? ¡Espero que sí! ![]()
¡Os toca a vosotros!
