We are looking for an official corrector of the Spanish sentences for this thread, so if you are interested, please send a PM to either rac1 or me.

As there are lots of native English speakers here, most of them can offer suggestions to the English sentences. I shall try to help as much as I can too, of course.

Here are the rules of the game:

  • Use the word in an English sentence and add the Spanish translation of that sentence. Try to use the word in an original way. Use your own words!

  • Vote for the sentences that you like most.

  • Write sentences of at least 5 words, but don't write paragraphs of 4 sentences or more.

  • Correct your sentences according to the suggestions of the corrector.

  • The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

  • Respect the rules of SpanishDict.

  • Enjoy the game and always keep in mind that all of us are here to learn.

De niña, yo decoraba una bolsa para que todos mis amigos me pudieran meter tarjetas de San Valentín.

As a child, I decorated a little bag at school so all my friends could put Valentine cards in it.

Yes, they did. I received many cute cards, but the decorated bags were my teacher's idea, so I can't take credit for it. - GraceM, Feb 14, 2013

A veces una mujer no quiere recibir las tarjetas de San Valentín.

Sometimes a woman doesn't want to receive Saint Valentine cards.

Información sobre el día de los enamorados en España:

San Valentín, en contra de lo que muchos piensan, no es una festividad creada por El Corte Inglés, sino que sus orígenes se remontan al año 498 y posiblemente es por eso que enviamos tantas tarjetas postales .

Valentine's day is not, in spite of what many people think, a day created by the store el Corte Inglés, but rather, it's origin goes back to the year 498 and perhaps this is why we send so many Valentine cards.

Alguien que conozco siempre dice que alguien es un tipo muy salado cuando cree que tiene gracia, pero ella tiene más de setenta años y no estoy seguro de que se use este término (la versión inglesa) de esta manera mucho hoy en día, por lo menos no donde vivo.

Someone that I know always says that someone is a real card when she finds them to be amusing, but she is over 70 years old and I am not sure that this term (the English version) is used much in this way nowadays, at least not where I live.

According to some people, the present economic situation is like a house of cards.

Según algunas personas, la situación económica actual parece un castillo de naipes.

One of the first things foreigners must do to stay in Chile is to apply for a government identity card.

Uno de las primeras cosas hay que hacer por extraneros para quedar en Chile es aplicar para un carnet.

Well surprise surprise, I drew a wild card.

¡ Que sorpresa! He tenido un poco de suerte.

Explanation: A wild card is an entry to soemthing you've not really qualified for. Example: Aberystwyth University drew a Wild Card for University Challenge ( a TV quiz for the very best universites) .

I have no idea, none, of how this tranlates, the tranlation isjust a sort of approximation, help much appreciated!
