A transitive verb is a verb that requires a direct object (e.g. I bought a book.).
1. (to increase in duration)
a. to extend
Para prolongar la vida de los alimentos, se usan muchos conservantes.Lots of preservatives are used to extend the life of the food.
b. to prolong
Me encantaría prolongar mi estadía, pero no tengo tiempo ni dinero.I wish I could prolong my stay, but I don't have the time nor the money.
2. (to increase in length)
a. to lengthen
Añadí más eslabones para prolongar la cadena.I lengthened the chain by adding more links.
A pronominal verb always uses a reflexive pronoun. (e.g. Te ves cansado.).
3. (to stretch out in duration)
a. to go on
El discurso del director de la escuela parecía prolongarse interminablemente.The principal's speech seemed to go on unendingly.
b. to carry on
Nuestra conversación se prolongó hasta el amanecer.Our conversation carried on until sunrise.
c. to continue
La guerra se prolongó por dos años más.The war continued for two more years.
4. (to stretch out in space)
a. to extend
La ruta se prolongaba a través del desierto y parecía ser infinita.The road extended across the desert and seemed endless.
