1. (to administer medication to)
a. to medicate
Tuvieron que medicinarlo porque la tos se resistía a desaparecer.They had to medicate him because his cough wouldn't go away.
b. to give medicine to
Como todo médico sabe, medicinar a un paciente no siempre es la mejor forma de tratar una enfermedad.As every doctor knows, giving medicine to a patient isn't always the best way to treat an illness.

A pronominal verb always uses a reflexive pronoun. (e.g. Te ves cansado.).
2. (to take medication)
a. to take medicine
A mi abuelo le encanta medicinarse y lo hace en cuanto se nota el menor síntoma.My grandfather loves taking medicine and he does it as soon as he notices the slightest symptom.
b. to self-medicate
Los médicos nos advierten continuamente de los peligros de medicinarse.Doctors continually warn us of the dangers of self-medicating.
