3. (physics)
a. to scatter
Las lentes cóncavas dispersan los rayos de luz.Concave lenses scatter light rays.
b. to diffuse
El científico consiguió dispersar rayos X usando un bloque de parafina.The scientist managed to diffuse X-rays using a block of paraffin wax.
4. (to cause to thin out)
a. to clear
Vendría bien un poco de viento para dispersar la niebla, ¿no?A little wind to clear the fog would come in handy, wouldn't it?
b. to disperse
Por suerte la tormenta dispersó el smog que cubría la ciudad.Fortunately the storm dispersed the smog over the city.
5. (to make poor use of)
a. to dissipate
Tenemos que hacer una reunión para tomar decisiones y no dispersar esfuerzos.We need to have a meeting in order to make decisions and avoid dividing our efforts.
A pronominal verb always uses a reflexive pronoun. (e.g. Te ves cansado.).

La manifestación antiglobalización se dispersó pacíficamente.The antiglobalization demonstration broke up peacefully.
b. to disperse
Antes de dispersarse, el público aplaudió largamente a los artistas.Before dispersing, the audience applauded the artists for a long time.
c. to scatter
Cuando llegó la policía, la mayoría de los manifestantes se dispersaron por las calles laterales.When the police arrived, most of the demonstrators scattered into the side streets.
7. (physics)
a. to scatter
La luz del sol se dispersa cuando atraviesa la atmósfera y crea distintos efectos.Sunlight scatters when it goes through the atmosphere, creating different effects.
b. to diffuse
Los rayos de luz se dispersan porque el paciente tiene astigmatismo.The rays of light diffuse because the patient has an astigmatism.
8. (to thin out)
a. to clear
La neblina se dispersó a media mañana.The mist cleared around mid-morning.
b. to diffuse
Si no se levanta viento, este humo no se va a dispersar.If the wind doesn't pick up, this smoke won't diffuse.
9. (to lose concentration)
a. to get distracted
Celeste está estudiando, pero se dispersa enseguida con el celular.Celeste is studying, but she gets disctracted easily with her cell phone.
