A transitive verb is a verb that requires a direct object (e.g. I bought a book.).
1. (military)
a. to entrench
La estrategia romana consistió en atrincherar sus campamentos.The Roman strategy consisted in entrenching their camps.
b. to fortify
Tras atrincherar sus posiciones, los combatientes abrieron fuego.The combatants opened fire after fortifying their positions.
c. to dig trenches around
Los soldados atrincheraron los yacimientos petrolíferos.The soldiers dug trenches around the oilfields.
A pronominal verb always uses a reflexive pronoun. (e.g. Te ves cansado.).
2. (military)
a. to entrench oneself
Cuando el enemigo empezó a atacar, los soldados se atrincheraron.When the enemy started attacking, the soldiers entrenched themselves.
3. (to be inflexible)
a. to take one's stand
Cuando mis padres se atrincheran, nada puede hacerles cambiar de opinión.When my parents take their stand, nothing can make them change their mind.
