1. (to dry or scorch)
a. to parch (plants, crops, or land)
El resplandeciente sol agostará las plantas en la huerta.The blazing sun will parch the plants in the kitchen garden.
La reciente ola de calor agostó todas las plantas de mi jardín.The recent heatwave parched all the plants in my yard.
b. to wither (plants or crops)
El granjero estaba desesperado porque la sequía había agostado los girasoles.The farmer was desperate because drought had withered the sunflowers.
2. (to sap)
a. to debilitate
Los ataques de la prensa lo agostaron y lo deprimieron.The attacks by the press had debilitated him and made him depressed.
b. to weaken
El cáncer lo agostó, pero no se dejó vencer.The cancer had weakened him, but he wouldn't give up.
agostarse
A pronominal verb always uses a reflexive pronoun. (e.g. Te ves cansado.).
3. (to dry up or become scorched)
a. to become parched (plants, crops, or land)
Las flores se agostaron debido al excesivo calor.The flowers became parched because of the excessive heat.
b. to wither (plants or crops)
Las plantas se agostaron porque no llovió en meses.The plants withered because it hadn't rained in months.
