Father's Day in the Spanish-Speaking World
What is Día del Padre?
There are días de fiesta(holidays) within every country in the world. While most of these holidays differ greatly between nations, there are some holidays that are celebrated worldwide. El Día del Padre(Father’s Day) is observed in most cultures as a way to honor our fathers and those who fulfill the father-figure role.
Father’s Day was founded in the United States in 1910 and quickly gained popularity in Mexico and in the rest of the Spanish-speaking world. The date when Father's Day is celebrated varies from country to country. Many Spanish-speaking cultures celebrate it on the third Sunday in June, like in the United States. Salvadorans, Guatemalans, and Nicaraguans celebrate Father’s Day on other dates in June, while Spaniards and Hondurans celebrate it on May 19th, a date that coincides with el Día de San José (Saint Joseph's Day). Saint Joseph is a biblical figure who is said to have been the foster father of Jesus.
