Question

Hello Everybody! Welcome to the Picture of the Day! This is a game where you can all practice your Spanish and English, but still have fun at the same time! Post your comments/titles/captions to this picture (both in Spanish and English) and vote for the responses you like. The best answer will be chosen soon on the basis of the answer I feel is the best, the fact that the person has corrected their post and possibly the number of votes. Si te encuentras con hongos extraños en el bosque, asegúrate de identificarlos antes de comerlos.

If you come across strange mushrooms in the forest, make sure you identify them before eating them.

This looks fine. Another option might be Si te encuentras con hongos...this version emphasizes that you just sort of accidentally "bump into" them, a chance encounter. Your version implies more that you were looking for them and you found some. - DilKen, Aug 1, 2017

Thanks Ken, I did intend a chance discovery. Just to clarify though, while your version is probably better, emphasising the incidental nature of the discovery, can't "encontrar" in its standard transitive form mean "find" either deliberately or by chance? - jellonz, Aug 1, 2017

Also I'd be interested in your thoughts on the second clause Ken. I was torn between infinitives or impersonal forms of the verbs. Unsure of how to make the latter work I went with the former :) - jellonz, Aug 1, 2017

Jellonz: I think regular encontrar C A N be used for an accidental finding / encounter, it's just that using the other version makes is more obvious that it was definitely accidental bumping into - DilKen, Aug 2, 2017

No debería haber bebido de esa botella con la etiqueta “bébeme”- pero he aprendido, no voy a comerme el pastel que dice pone “cómeme”.

I should not have drunk from that bottle with the label “drink me”- but I have learned, I am not going to eat the cake that says “eat me”.

I think debería (conditional) is fine here and is probably what I would have used. I just wanted to point out, probably more for the benefit of others, that Spanish speakers often use the indicative to mean should. - DilKen, Aug 1, 2017

Feliz. Are you thinking about beberse - I drank it all up! I think this would work if the sentence stated that he drank the whole bottle. Since it says he drank FroM the bottle it implies the opposite. Or are you thinking of something else? - DilKen, Aug 1, 2017

OK, you made another change in the right directions. I would use te instead of lo, because lo could only refer to a him or an it. So, it is also ambiguous unless you add an a él. (since it could mean it) ..... - DilKen, Aug 1, 2017

OK...now I could be wrong about this, but when una persona is the direct object of the verb (not the indirect object) I don't think there should be a personal a. It is an impersonal person (a non-identified person) so no personal a. I could be wrong. - DilKen, Aug 1, 2017

I'm not sure final it would be better to say insignificant to the nature or front to nature. Que lio Corrected. Man and his civilization are insignificant in the face of nature
