Weekend Subjunctive Practice 22: En cuanto

Question

¡Bienvenido a nuestro hilo! Each weekend, Cordobesa and I will present a different topic on everybody’s favorite subject… the subjunctive!

We will give an explanation of the topic, and a couple of examples.

Write sentences at least 5 words long. Write your Spanish sentence, and include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by Cordobesa in the comments section. Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.)

Post pictures if you’d like, and don’t forget to vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the topic as well as the number of votes.

Weekend Subjunctive Practice 22: En cuanto

Explanation:

When “en cuanto” refers to an idea or time in the future, the subjunctive is used when you conjugate the verb that follows. “En cuanto” works exactly like “cuando”, but since it is so commonly used, it is worth mentioning.

The only difference is that “cuando” = “when”, and “en cuanto” = “as soon as”.

Examples:

Podemos usar nuestros móviles otra vez en cuanto aterrice el avión.

We can use our cell phones again as soon as the plane lands.

Os digo la información sobre la reunión en cuanto la sepa.

I’ll tell you the information about the meeting as soon as I know it.

When “en cuanto” refers to something habitual, the indicative is used for the verb that follows.

Example:

Siempre me lavo los dientes en cuanto me despierto.

I always brush my teeth as soon as I wake up.

Thank you so much for this Tosh. A question: there is a rule that the subjunctive is used only when there is a change of subject, I hope that you... but that doesn's seem to be the case here. So is it only for certain types of phrase?.. - jennysk, Apr 11, 2015

Jennysk, depende del verbo. A veces es obligatorio el uso del infinitivo cuando es es el mismo sujeto. Por ejemplo, "Necesito que vayas", pero "Necesito ir", no puedo decir "Necesito que yo vaya". Otras veces no es obligatorio, pero suena mal, o puede... - Cordobesa, Apr 13, 2015

La esposa: ?¡Dime en cuanto los invitados lleguen, por favor! ¡Tengo que maquillarme, ahora!?

El marido: ? ¿En cuanto lleguen? ¡Lo siento, querida, es demasiado tarde porque ya han llegado! ¡Todos ellos están esperando para conocerte....sin prisa...jejeje!"?

En cuanto nos bajemos salgamos del avión el sábado que viene, nos bajaremos de la escalera mecánica, pasaremos por el control de inmigración, recogeremos el equipaje, pasaremos por la aduana y luego saldremos del edificio y buscaremos el al conductor concertado de antemano. Después de encontrarlo, podremos empezar a relajarnos.

As soon as we get off the airplane this coming Saturday, we will go down the escalator, pass through immigration, recover our luggage, pass through customs and then leave the building and look for our pre-arranged driver. After finding him, we will be able to begin to relax.
