Weekend Subjunctive Practice 16: Después de que

¡Bienvenido a nuestro hilo! Each weekend, Cordobesa and I will present a different topic on everybody’s favorite subject… the subjunctive!

We will give an explanation of the topic, and a couple of examples.

Write sentences at least 5 words long. Write your Spanish sentence, and include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by Cordobesa in the comments section. Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.)

Post pictures if you’d like, and don’t forget to vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the topic as well as the number of votes.

¡Vamos allá!

Weekend Subjunctive Practice 16: Después de que

Explanation:

Let’s first look at “después de”, which functions as a preposition in Spanish meaning “after”. Normally there is not a change of subject, as in the following examples, and it is followed by the infinitive.

Examples:

Voy a estudiar después de cenar.

I am going to study after eating dinner. (“I” will study after “I” eat dinner.)

Venid a mi casa después de ver la peli.

Come to my house after watching the movie. (“You all” come to my house after “you all” watch the movie.)

However, as we have seen many times, when there is a change of subject, “después de que” is used, and the verb following “que” is conjugated in the subjunctive.

Examples:

Voy a estudiar después de que mi hermana use el ordenador.

I am going to study after my sister uses the computer.

Venid a mi casa después de que termine la peli.

Come to my house after the movie ends.

¡Os toca a vosotros!

I spend so much time with word of the day exercises that I skip over the subjunctive thread. No more. I'll be taking advantage of these lessons from now on. Thanks for doing this. - Sassette, Feb 23, 2015
Quiero decir gracias otra vez por la oportunidad de practicar. - annierats, Feb 24, 2015

Después de que yo haga algunas tareas en el jardín y que mi esposa haga algunos quehaceres domésticos, vamos a un festival de cerveza y luego a un restaurante para cenar- parece que mi esposa cree que la mejor manera de convencerme de que debería salir con ella es incluir cerveza en los planes.

After I do some chores in the garden and my wife does some housework, we are going to a beer festival and then a restaurant to dine- it seems that my wife thinks that the best way to convince me that I should go out with her is to include beer in the plans.

I think systems of consistent positive rewards tend to reinforce behaviors. ;) - bosquederoble, Feb 21, 2015
I'll take that as a yes. - rac1, Feb 21, 2015
The question is do I manipulate her by only going out when there is beer involved, or does she manipulate me by offering beer when she wants me to go out. ;) - bosquederoble, Feb 22, 2015
PS, a few of the beers were quite good. And my wife and I agreed on some. And the dinner was excellent- I had a Chimichurri flank steak with black beans, mashed potatoes and fresh spinach with a garlic sauce. :) - bosquederoble, Feb 22, 2015
That sounds very good. - rac1, Feb 22, 2015

Sometimes you realize how much somebody loved you only after they go away. But other times it works the other way round: some people have to walk away from your life so that you can understand that they have been an enormous burden for you.

"cuenta DE lo mucho". Me suena un poquito mejor, si quitas "eso" y "ellas" (no está mal si lo dejas, pero me suena más fluido si lo suprimes). :) - Cordobesa, Feb 24, 2015
Ah, por supuesto, darse cuenta de algo. Tienes razón, sí suena mejor así. Muchísimas gracias. :) - Manity, Feb 24, 2015

Katy , I haven't managed to think of a good phrase yet, my brain is on go-slow so maybe I can join you mid-week. - annierats, Feb 23, 2015
Thanks Cordobesa. I'll check later for corrections. Annie, I see you were inspired long before midweek. - katydew, Feb 23, 2015
Yes, but I couldn't make the sort of sentence that I wanted...Could I have a muffin, pls, it is snowing here and a bit depressing. - annierats, Feb 23, 2015
"Muffins de arándanos" se entiende, aunque la palabra tradicional aquí sería "magdalenas de arándanos". :) - Cordobesa, Feb 24, 2015
En este caso, yo añadiría "después de que YO fría", porque si no, puede llevar a confusión sobre quién va a freir el beicon. - Cordobesa, Feb 24, 2015
Ah, yah. Bueno. Gracias, Cordobesa. Y Annie, cierto, pero ahora son magdalenas sobrante. - katydew, Feb 25, 2015

Due to the lack of subject change, you will most likely be told you do not need to conjugate- "después de terminar de escribir..." Repuesta is not the same as respuesta. Cordobesa may prefer ver to mirar, being from Spain. But await her input. ;) - bosquederoble, Feb 22, 2015
You're right about the subjunctive! What was I thinking? I'll edit right now. - AnnRon, Feb 22, 2015
Gracias, Bosque. :) Muy bien, Ann, solo falta cambiar "respuesta". - Cordobesa, Feb 22, 2015
Please, to me there is a subject change, from 'It' will be time to 'I' finish... Or am I missing something?? - jennysk, Feb 23, 2015
Jennysk, creo que Ann cambió la frase. Sí, hay cambio de sujeto. - Cordobesa, Feb 23, 2015
Bueno. Entiendo, gracias. - jennysk, Feb 23, 2015

Después de tirar el sillón favorito de Wolfie a la basura me arrepentía pero Wolfie me dijó que no le importa, uno se duerme mejor en el sofá.

After chucking Wolfie's favourite arm-chair on the rubbish- tip I regretted it , but Wolfie said it doesn't matter, one sleeps better in the sofa.

"a la basura" y "sofá" con tilde. Si encuentra mi cama, me veo durmiendo yo en el sofá, jajaja. :) - Cordobesa, Feb 22, 2015
Muchísimas gracias, Cordobesa, t least twice you've had to tell me it's ala basura. And there I was worrying if I needed the 'se', or not. - annierats, Feb 22, 2015

Some years ago their grandparents gave my children so many chocolate eggs that, after gobbling them all up, the children felt sick.

I tried to work it so that it would have to come ut in the subjunctive, but , in spite of eating 3 chocolate eggs whilst thinking, it didn't come out right. Sorry about that. I retire somewhat quesy. - annierats, Feb 21, 2015
El "que" sin tilde, y yo quitaría "ellos", suena mejor y se entiende que los que se marearon fueron los niños. :) - Cordobesa, Feb 22, 2015
Bueno, gracias, tuve miedo que los abuelos se marearan.. - annierats, Feb 22, 2015

Si el amigo de Katy me diera una de sus magdalenas famosas creo que podría escribir una frase mejor después de comérmela.

If Katy's friend were to give me one of his famous muffins, I think I would be able to write a better sentence after eating it. ( the muffin, not the sentence)
