Weekend Subjunctive Practice 10: Dudar que

Question

¡Bienvenido a nuestro hilo! Each weekend, Cordobesa and I will present a different topic on everybody’s favorite subject… the subjunctive!

We will give an explanation of the topic, and a couple of examples.

Write sentences at least 5 words long. Write your Spanish sentence, and include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by Cordobesa in the comments section. Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.)

Post pictures if you’d like, and don’t forget to vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the topic as well as the number of votes.

Weekend Subjunctive Practice 10: Dudar que

Explanation:

If there is a doubt in your mind that something will happen, or is happening, “dudar que” can be used, and it is followed by the subjunctive.

Examples:

Dudo que Pati vaya a México este verano (porque no tiene suficiente dinero).

I doubt that Patti is going to Mexico this summer (because she doesn’t have enough money).

¿Dudas que esté diciendo la verdad?

Literal translation: Do you doubt that I’m telling the truth?

More natural translation: Don’t you think I’m telling the truth?

Él duda que nadie venga al teatro esta noche. Llueve mucho hoy y dudo que vaya a terminar pronto.

He doubts that anyone will come to the theatre tonight. There is a lot of rain and I doubt that it will finish soon.

Thanks, Cordo. Collective nouns can be tricky. I have little clue how they're handled in Spanish. In this case, I think it would more likely be treated as singular in English since the jury is acting of one accord, so I'm sure you're right. - AnnRon, Jan 10, 2015

Llego tarde para subir mi frase, dudo que Cordobesa y Tosh vean a ver esto.

"vayan a ver esto" o "vean esto". "Subir", cuando significa "to post" es transitivo, así que necesitas un complemento directo, tienes que subir algo... "subir mi frase", por ejemplo. :) - Cordobesa, Jan 13, 2015

Dudo que el resultado del campeonato nacional de fútbol americano universitario le importe a la mayoría en este sitio, pero quizás sea importante para unos pocos además de mí, y quizás algunos de estos también deseen que gane el mismo equipo gane que yo.

I doubt that the result of the College National Football Championship matters to the majority at this site, but perhaps it is important to a few in addition to me, and perhaps some of those also desire that the same team wins that I do.
