Weekend Subjunctive Practice 3: Es importante que

17
votes

¡Bienvenido a nuestro hilo! Each weekend, Cordobesa and I will present a different topic on everybody’s favorite subject… the subjunctive!

We will give an explanation of the topic, and a couple of examples.

Write sentences at least 5 words long. Write your Spanish sentence, and include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by Cordobesa in the comments section. Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.)

Post pictures if you’d like, and don’t forget to vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the topic as well as the number of votes.

¡Vamos allá!

Weekend Subjunctive Practice 3: Es importante que

Explanation:

“Es importante que” is one of the many triggers that is followed by the subjunctive because the speaker is expressing a subjective opinion. Just because it is important to the speaker that something happens, does not mean that it is important to everyone.

Examples:

Es importante que cierres la puerta con llave cuando te vayas.

It is important that you lock the door when you leave. (I think it’s important that you lock the door when you leave… do you? Maybe it’s not your house and you don’t care.)

Es importante que les regaléis flores a vuestras novias el Día de San Valentín.

It is important that you (plural) give flowers to your girlfriends on Valentine’s Day. (I think this is important… but you may not. Maybe you would rather give chocolate.)

¿Veis cómo estas frases expresan una opinión del hablante? ¡Espero que sí!

¡Os toca a vosotros!

Jajaja, ¡un perro muy limpio! "se laven", but when we're talking about cleaning windows, we usually use the verb "limpiar": "se limpien". :) - Cordobesa, Nov 23, 2014
Muchas gracias, Cordobesa! ^_^ - Findy, Nov 23, 2014
hehe You would know this is definitely subjective if you saw my windows! We have 3 dogs and I've pretty much "thrown in the towel" (given up) on the back sliding door. - Findy, Nov 23, 2014
Jajaja, la misma expresión en español: "tirar la toalla". ¡Seguro que tus ventanas están muy limpias! :)) - Cordobesa, Nov 23, 2014
Another green post! Wow, thank you! :D - Findy, Dec 3, 2014

Si quiero que mi equipo favorito de fútbol americano universitario gane, es importante que mi esposa lleve su collar de la suerte, y por esto eso es muy importante que yo le se lo recuerde de eso, pero la verdad es que lo que yo creo que es lo más importante es que el equipo juegue bien. Sin embargo, ella lleva el collar.

If I want my favorite university football team to win, it is important that my wife wear her lucky necklace, and therefore it is very important that I remind her of that, but the truth is that what I think is the most important is that the team plays well. Nonetheless, she wears the necklace.

Which team? - rac1, Nov 22, 2014
I salute you for using subjunctive in English! To say "por esto" is not incorrect but sounds odd because it´s much more common to say "por eso". In these cases, the being close or far doesn´t apply although I cannot say why - 005faa61, Nov 23, 2014
Estamos de acuerdo. Yo pondría "y por eso es muy importante que yo se lo recuerde". Otra cosita: "yo creo que lo más importante", sin "es". - Cordobesa, Nov 23, 2014
Thank you both, and yes, I originally had por eso, de esto, but changed if for the reason Julian hints at. Thank you Cordobesa for showing me how to solve it most simply. :) - bosquederoble, Nov 23, 2014
And Julian, it is interesting that I wasn't consistent- I should have said that the team play well. I don't analyze my English grammar so much. - bosquederoble, Nov 23, 2014
Anyway, our team won, so we are still in the race. - bosquederoble, Nov 24, 2014

Para mí es muy importante que lea muchas libros en español y vea películas hispanohablantes porque eso es la única posibilidad para practicar la lengua.

For me it is very important that to read many books in Spanish and see Spanish-speaking movies because that is the only possibility to practice the language.

I was hurrying too much and really goofed. - rac1, Nov 22, 2014

- Cordobesa, Nov 23, 2014
Gracias, Cordebesa! From the dictionary: cliff (sea cliff) acantilado (m); [of mountain etc] risco (m); precipicio (m); - bandit51jd, Nov 23, 2014
so probably "precipicio" would be better? - bandit51jd, Nov 23, 2014
Quizás, pero "precipicio" solo se usa para algo muy, muy alto. También se usa "barranco" o "despeñadero". - Cordobesa, Nov 23, 2014

También puedes decir, un poco más fácil, "...con cuidado a quién votar". En la segunda frase, yo quitaría un "todos": "No es verdad que todos los políticos SEAN iguales", o "No es verdad que los políticos sean todos iguales". :) - Cordobesa, Nov 24, 2014
