Spanish-speaking Music

I want suggestions of Spanish-speaking singers-songwriters from Spanish-speaking countries. I would like to get in touch with all kinds of music, I already know some from Mexico, Argentina and Spain, like Pablo López and Julieta Venegas. I wanna improve my Spanish and learn more about the Hispanic culture through music. I will wait for your help.

I could post loads, but

  1. do you want links to youtube?
  2. do you want the Spanish lyrics?
  3. do you want easy to listen to ballads which are easy to listen to, or a variety of styles?
  4. I actually among others enjoy a group from Galicia but they sing in galego. We listened to 'para vivir' sung by Tania Libertad in our Spanish class as a good representation of 'reported speech' It is actually written by a Cuban and Libertad, though she lives in Mexico, is Peruvian. She sings very clearly.

Tania Libertad - Para Vivir

On the poetry thread I have linked to some of Mercedes Sosa. She was passionate about rights for indigenous people and human rights to.

Here you can listen to an interview with Nacho Vegas and download for free some of his songs - he is a sort of Bob Dylan

Nacha Vega

Here is a song by a female singer, Rosana, from Spain:

Llegaremos a tiempo

Here are some beautiful songs about emigration:

Manu Chau from Spain: Clandestino

and Chambao from Spain:

papeles mojados

and Gaby Moreno [Guatemalan]:

Ave Que Emigra

I enjoy Jorge Drexler but as you are from Brazil you must know his music:

La vida es mas compleja de lo que parece and one with the excellent Sabina Zamba del olvido

Carla Morrison and Jot Dog - Mexican [no links added as you said you know Mexican music] . Vetusta Morla a Madrid band :

Valiente

Fernando Ubiergo - a Chilean singer songwriter

Los Ojos de Rodrigo

Celtas Cortos from Spain:

Cuentame Un Cuento

Luz Casal - Spain:

entre mis recuerdos

Joaquin Sabina - all great but I love this duet:

Jugar por Jugar

Joan Serrat- lots of great songs esp. with Sabina. This is from a series of songs of MiguelHernandez's haunting poems:

Nanas de la cebolla

Amaral - from Zaragoza:

sin ti, no soy nada

Leiva - from Spain:

Vis a vis

Pablo Alborán - from Málaga, this is a duet with a Portuguese singer:

Perdóname

I could add lots more - and I haven't added any Cuban music yet. I am hapy to add specific songs or more singers.

I am having another go with Cuban music. I have been there and been in the casa de trovas. Brilliant. I have also seen Buena Vista Social Club in England:

Silvio Rodríguez

Óleo de mujer con sombrero

Milanés y Rodriguez

El breve espacio en que no estas

NB anything sung by Rodriguez or written by Milanés is good. Ojála is perfect for learning the subjunctive.

Celia Cruz Guantanamera

Ibrahim Ferrer Omar Portuondo

Quizas,quizas,quizas

Omara Portuondo

Dos Gardenias para tí
