No. 47 - Weekly perífrasis verbales: Practice Exercise: Traer + Participio

Note well - this week's perífrases verbales starts with the word traer then adds a participio form of another verb. Did you forget what a participio is? Here's a little help from the grammar section of this site: participio

Traer + participio -> to bring about something or to bring with it ....

Traer + participio

Examples/Ejemplos

La afirmación de Susana trae aparejada cierta tristeza.

(Susana's statement brings with it a certain sadness.)

A ‘perífrasis verbal’ is a structure with a helping verb plus an ‘infinitivo’ or a ‘gerundio’ (verb that ends in ar, er, ir).

More info on perifrasis verbales: a helpful link

Good link to explain perifrases verbales: great link by another SD contributor

Let’s practice a few of these in simple sentences. Here are the rules:

1.One sentence per post.

2.Use the ‘perífrasis verbal’ for this week in a sentence in Spanish. Then write it in English.

3.You may post one image to illustrate your sentence.

SilviaC will be the corrector for the Spanish. I will help out on the English. SilviaC ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Una “perífrasis verbal” tiene una estructura con un verbo auxiliar y un “infinitivo” o “gerundio”.

Vamos a practicar un poco estas estructuras en oraciones simples. Estas son las reglas:

1.Una oración por respuesta

2.Usa la perífrasis verbal escogida para esta semana y escribe una oración con ella en español y en inglés.

3.Puedes usar una imagen para ilustrar tu respuesta.

SilviaC será la correctora de español. Yo ayudaré con el inglés.

New link I've found recently: new link with additional info *If you missed last week's practice here is the link: No. 46 - distar mucho de infinitivo

Katy, que bonito nombre escogiste para tu frase! ;-) - 00e46f15, Nov 11, 2013
You are right Susy! It's truly a lovely name that has attached itself to some awesome women. - katydew, Nov 11, 2013
But, alas, the example sentence was from SylviaC. ;o) - katydew, Nov 11, 2013

El estudiante trajo escrito su reporte.

The student brought his report in written form. Or: The student brought a written report.

I hope I understood this correctly, Katy.

Both good. Also, the student brought in his report written (as opposed to typed) - rogspax, Nov 10, 2013
Thanks. Seeing your Spanish sentence helps me to understand the perifrase better. - katydew, Nov 10, 2013
Yeah; Now that I see this it seems to click - HackerKing, Nov 11, 2013

Skating on thin ice this week. Anxious to see other examples. - katydew, Nov 10, 2013
Es una frase bien construida, pero creo que sería más conveniente cambiar "iluminado" por "aclarado". - SilviaC, Nov 11, 2013
Thanks Silvia. I appreciate the help on word choice. - katydew, Nov 11, 2013

This phrase sounds awkward even in English. Though I'm probably doing it wrong raspberry

Esta arma nuclear nos traerá destruido a todos nosotros.

This nuclear missile will bring about the destruction of us all.

In English I'd relegate this to a more formal style of speech.writing. Is it the same in Spanish?

Let's see what Sylvia says tomorrow. - katydew, Nov 10, 2013
En este caso creo que sería mejor decir "nos traerá incluida la destrucción de todos". En este caso destrucción es lo que trae (el objeto directo), pero no es un verbo que tenga que ver en la acción. - SilviaC, Nov 11, 2013
¡Gracias! Escribí esto antes de que escribieras aquellos ejemplos. Así que estaba confundido. - HackerKing, Nov 11, 2013

Katy, Here are a few more examples. Please check my English.

El niño trae derretido el cono de nieve en su mano.

The boy is carrying his melted ice cream cone in his hand.

Yo traigo pegada en mi mente una canción que escuché en la radio desde ayer.

I have a song stuck in my head that I heard yesterday on the radio.

Mi papá trajo acarreados sus toros desde su rancho hasta la ciudad.

My father brought his bulls hauled from his ranch to the city.

This is very, very helpful. You are a star for doing this. - katydew, Nov 10, 2013
Son unos ejemplos estupendos. - SilviaC, Nov 11, 2013

Wow. This is tough. It is easy to pair traer with nouns but with a verb... Not so easy.

  • La falta de lluvia trajo la hambruna. (noun)
  • The lack of rain bought famine.

  • La falta de lluvia trajo cambiado en el curso del río. (verb) But very ackward.

  • The lack of rain brought about change in the course of the river.

I would just use the past tense, ie. changed the course of the river.

I know! I'm having a hard time with the participio on this one too. - katydew, Nov 10, 2013
I don't think I have ever heard this used. At least I don't remember it. - gringojrf, Nov 10, 2013
La primera es perfecta, pero le faltaría el participio. Sugiero "La falta de lluvia trajo acompañada la hambruna". - SilviaC, Nov 11, 2013
La segunda es más complicada pero que podría sonar bien "Trajo cambiado el curso del río" o como en la sugerencia de la primea "Trajo acompañada un cambio en el curso del río". - SilviaC, Nov 11, 2013
Very interesting. I think I'm finally starting to 'get it' but wondering if I'll figure out how to use it in a conversation. - katydew, Nov 11, 2013

¡Buena frase! Sólo hay que cambiar "aparejado" por "aparejada" pues la lluvia es de género femenino. - SilviaC, Nov 11, 2013
Muchas gracias Sylvia! - 0095ca4c, Nov 11, 2013

El noche trajo soñado a la casa.

The night brought dreams with it to the house?? The night brought dreaming to the house??

Quite confusing. Are there any more examples or guidelines?

I'm wondering if this is a perifrases that is used mainly with a handful of certain Spanish verbs. I feel something is getting lost in the translation to English. - katydew, Nov 10, 2013
Sylyon added some examples on 2 posts that might be helpful to you. They were to me. - katydew, Nov 10, 2013
Este caso es complicado pues la perífrasis se refiere a algo que viene con una acción o característica. Quizá sería mejor "La noche trajo acompañadas el sueño y la oscuridad a la casa" - SilviaC, Nov 11, 2013

This one is tough. I would need more examples to develop a feel for what is or isn´t valid here. - rogspax, Nov 10, 2013
Yes, I agree with you. Examples on this one would be a big help. But, when Sylvia corrects them tomorrow, we'll get a better feel for this phrase that seems a bit hard for English speakers. - katydew, Nov 10, 2013
