Paco and the doctor visit, an interactive excercise

Question

Every few days my lovely wife ( a Spanish native speaker, and fluent in English ) and I will sit here at my computer and do an interactive script as a translation exercise. She will dictate to me in English and I must translate it to everyday Spanish as I correct her English.

Download them and modify them to your intent if you wish. You may translate it if you wish . Practice with a friend or several friends, The grammar is correct for daily speech.

This was the script of a few days ago. And please note this is Spanish of northern México, as we would use it in ordinary conversation.

We do these with the intention of coming as close as possible to a real world dialogue, not a studied, structured script.

This is a doctor visit in which I did not do very well at all.This exercise was done to help and correct me in a new environment.

I thought I would share this as it may be useful to any of you who wish to practice interactive Spanish and also use it as a reading and pronunciation exercise, there are several difficult words in it. You may even want to record it and add your recording here. The names may be changed to protect the innocent!

This is a three person script:

LA CITA CON EL MÉDICO DERMATÓLOGO

(Paco entra a la recepción del consultorio de la doctora Parra)

Paco: Buenas tardes señorita.

Recepcionista: Buenas tardes señor.

Paco: Tengo una cita a las seis y media con la doctora Parra.

Recepcionista: ¿Es usted paciente de la doctora?

Paco: No, vengo por primera vez.

Recepcionista: Ahh… entonces, por favor, llene este formulario ( se lo pasa).

( Paco recibe el formulario, se sienta, lo llena y se lo devuelve ).

Recepcionista: Gracias, tome asiento por favor. En un momento lo atenderá la doctora.

Paco: Gracias.

(Pasan quince minutos)

Recepcionista: Señor Paco Finkler, pase por favor.

Paco: (se levanta ) ¿Por dónde?

Recepcionista: Suba las escaleras y luego a la derecha.

Paco: (camina según las instrucciones y entra al consultorio). ¡Buenas tardes doctora!

Doctora: Buenas tardes… ¿Quién lo mandó, señor Finkler?

Paco: Perdón, no entendí.

Doctora: ¿Quién lo recomendó conmigo, señor Finkler?

Paco: ¡Ahh…!, La doctora Laura Mendoza. Soy su paciente.

Doctora: Mmm, muy bien... ¿Y cuál es su problema?... ¿Qué le pasa?

Paco: Tengo una mancha en la piel que me ha estado creciendo. Además está engrosando. Me salió hace un año, pero no me molesta. A mi esposa le preocupa.

Doctora: Es usted alérgico a alguna medicina?

Paco: No que yo sepa.

Doctora: ¿ Está tomando algún medicamento?

Paco: No por el momento

Doctora: ¿Ha tomado alguno durante los últimos seis meses?

Paco: Sí, acabo de terminar un tratamiento con antibióticos y bronco dilatadores, por una infección bronquial.

Doctora: ¿Qué tomó?

Paco: Amoxilina y Nardex

Doctora: ¿Por cuánto tiempo?

Paco: Por un mes.

Doctora: Muy bien, vamos a ver esa mancha. ¿Dónde la tiene?

Paco: En un hombro. En el izquierdo.

Doctora: Descúbrase por favor.

(Paco se quita la camisa y le muestra el lugar).

Doctora: Mmm… ya veo. Es una lesión benigna, sin peligro potencial, pero de todos modos se la vamos a quitar, para que se quede tranquilo. Pase por favor. Por aquí.

Paco: Sí, gracias.

(lo conduce a otra área)

Doctora: Este tipo de lesiones pueden seguir creciendo. A veces hasta dos o tres centímetros y también pueden dar comezón, y la gente se asusta. Son escandalosas pero inofensivas.

Paco: Es un alivio.

Doctora: Tome asiento aquí y no se mueva, por favor. Usaremos nitrógeno para congelarla. Solo tomará unos segundos. ( procede a congelar la lesión). ¡Listo!

Paco: ¿Es todo?

Doctora: Sí. ¿Fue rápido, no? Se pondrá negra, se formará una costra y se caerá.

Paco: ¿Instrucciones especiales doctora?

Doctora: Ningunas. En caso de molestias llámeme. Pero no debe tener ningunas.

Paco: Muchas gracias, espero no verla pronto.

Doctora: ( Se ríe ). Esperemos que no.

Paco. Que tenga buen día

Doctora: Igualmente.

( Paco se dirige de nuevo a la recepción)

Recepcionista: ¿Listo?

Paco: Sí, ¿cuánto le debo?

Recepcionista: Son ochocientos pesos.

Paco: ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta?.

Recepcionista: Sí, aceptamos de crédito y débito…….¿Necesita factura?

Paco: No. El recibo es suficiente.

( Paco paga con su tarjeta, la recepcionista le entrega el recibo y se va).

• Doctor: (She laughs) Let's hope not!

Another fine script. I could read it in my sleep. I will admit to having lived though this exact scenario, word-for-word, with my dermatologist, haha. That made it easier! (The price was higher, too, by the way.)

I would write out a translation, but it would look exactly like Nicole's.

(Paco enters the reception area of Doctor Parra's clinic)

Paco: Good afternoon, m'am.( I would use Miss here)

Recepcionist: Good afternoon sir.

Paco: I have a 6:30 appointment with Dr. Parra.

Recepcionist: Are you a patient of the doctor?

Paco: No, I am coming for the first time.

Recepcionista: Ahh… then please fill out this form. ( She passes it.).

( Paco receives the forum (form) and sits down, fills it and returns it).

Recepcionist: Thank you. Take a seat please. In a moment the doctor will see you.

Paco: Thank you.

(Fifteen minutes pass.)

Recepcionist: Mr. Paco Finkler, please enter.

Paco: (He stands up ) To where?

Recepcionist: Go up the stairs and then to the right.

Paco: (Walks following the instructions and enters the office).Good afternoon doctor!

Doctor:Good afternnon… Who sent you Mr. Finkler?

Paco: Excuse me, I don't understand.

Doctor: Who recommended you to me Mr. Finkler?

Paco: Ahh…!, Doctor Laura Mendoza. I am her patient.

Doctor: Mmm, very good.. And what is your problem?.. What happened to you? (What is happening with you?) Paco: I have a spot on my skin has developed ( that has been growing) .
