kayak. In previous years, I had been stuck in currents and not made......... for a long time and it added much more distance to my swim. I had to remember to

In 1977, the first "Save the Bay" swim was held with 100 people taking part. I have participated 5 times, my last time was in the swim depicted in this video from 2008.
There were 450 swimmers that year. We took off from Newport, also known as Aquidneck Island. The closeguard closed the Bay for 2 hours. There were 3 ways of swimmers; those swimming without kayakers, those swimming with kayakers, and those swimming with assisted devices.
This was the first year that I had a kayak team and I was so happy with them. My friends, Jeff and Bonnie had a double kayak with a large, red, plastic ball buoy and a huge boocave?? of colorful balloons on the kayak so it would be easy for me to spot among the hundreds of other kayaks. When the starting gun when off, everyone had to find their kayak and I had no difficulty finding mine. They led the way for my 1.7 mile swim. Although the currents were strong, I followed the course easily by following my kayak. In previous years, I had been stuck in currents and not made headway for a long time and it added much more distance to my swim. I had to remember to stop and drink water to try to prevent laycraps?? (however, I got them anyway). I made it to the finish line in about an hour and 20 minutes. I received the medal, a towel, and a t-shirt and we had a wonderful party.

This video on Save the Bay sheds a light on one of my favorite organizations. Narragansett Bay is vital for RI. I hope the Spanish speaking group enjoys the video and learns a lot about where Sandy lives.
