An adjective is a word that describes a noun (e.g. the big dog).
1. (excessively sentimental)
a. corny
Me encanta el poema que me escribió aunque fuera un poco cursi.I love the poem that he wrote me even though it was a bit corny.
b. sappy
Sus votos matrimoniales eran muy cursi pero también muy sinceros.Their wedding vows were very sappy, but also very heartfelt.
c. twee
La película de romance fue demasiado melodramática y cursi para mi gusto.That romance movie was too melodramatic and twee for my taste.
2. (gaudy)
a. tacky
Ese diseño de florecitas y mariposas me parece muy cursi para un vestido de gala formal.I think the flowers and butterflies design is too tacky for a formal gala outfit.
3. (pretentious)
a. affected
La manera en que actuó en la obra me pareció más cursi que dramática.The way he acted in the play seemed to me more affected than dramatic.
4. (finicky)
a. prissy
Deja de ser tan cursi y delicada; tienes que irte en autobús como todos.Don't be so prissy and delicate; you have to take a bus like anyone else.
This means that the noun can be masculine or feminine, depending on the gender of person it refers to (e.g. el doctor, la doctora).
5. (pretentious person)
This refers to an idiomatic word or phrase for which there is no word-for-word translation.

Solo una cursi usaría lenguaje tan florido en su autobiografía.Only someone seriously affected would use such overly flowery language in her autobiography.
