In Spanish literature, especially of the Golden Age, the pícaro is a roguish character whose travels and adventures are used as a vehicle for social satire. The anonymous Lazarillo de Tormes (1554), which relates the life and adventures of one such character, is thought to be the first of the genre known as the picaresque novel, or novela picaresca. Other well-known picaresque novels were written by Cervantes (Rinconete y Cortadillo) and Francisco de Quevedo (El Buscón).
