Can someone tell me how "fulano" is used? What's his name or so and so are the definitions.
Is it used like a proper noun such as "Fulano fue a la tienda'" Or is it derogatory as so and so can sometimes be in English? Is it used when you just don't know or remember someone's name'

I've only used "fulano" in hypothetical situations when I'm not talking about anyone in particular but I found the following link:

It is not derogatory, but something like "John Doe", to refer to anyone without being specific.

You also have "mengano". As a matter of fact, we say "fulano y mengano".

It's like "so-and-so went to the store". Used for a non-specific person.

Thanks, that clarifies it for me.
