To say that running=corriendo is an incomplete answer at best. If I saw the word running all by itself, I would assume it to be a gerund, which functions as a noun. In that case, its Spanish equivalent is correr, not corriendo.
Do you like running? = ¿Te gusta correr?
Furthermore, "to run" has dozens of meanings in English, such as running for president, running errands, a running river, etc.
I was going to say pretty much what James just did, but I got here late, so I'll add a few figures:
To run can be translated as "correr" when it means "to take long steps to move quickly", and for a few other meanings, but there are over 30 meanings of "to run" in certain contexts where it has to be translated verbs other than "correr".
Besides that, "running" as a verb can be translated as "correr" o "corriendo" depending on the sentence, so any answer to your question has limited usefulness.
trote when talking about a horse it means to gallop
when talking about a human or person -if you wil- trote means to jog
.
El corredor esta corriendo tan despacio que parece que esta trotando; porque trotar es un paso intermedio entre caminar y correr.

The site's dictionary gives "trotar" = "to trot" (and it sounds like they're cognates). The standard gaits for a horse are (in ascending speed): walk, trot, canter, and gallop.
Thank you for the correction/observation.
