...become fluent in spanish?
English is my native tongue and I've decided, at the age of 40+, to learn how to speak Spanish. By the end of this week, I will have completed 6 hours of college elementary spanish. However, I know too many people who after 4 semesters of spanish, still cannot speak it well.
What is your opinion on the likelihood of my becoming fluent? What suggestions do you have for someone wanting to learn? Do you think this old dog can learn any new tricks'

I think the best way to become fluent is to live or visit a country that is only spanish speaking ... that way you are forced to learn it and not only learn the language but the culture as well
A Dutch teacher of German once told me that to be able to speak another language you need to have about two or three thousand words in that language and to become fluent in a language, you need five thousand.
This seems reasonable as I'm sure most native speakers could not reel off 5 thousand words in their own language,I know that I couldn't,so if you want to put a numerical value on it,I'd go with 2 to 3 thousand,2 thousand being extremely competent!
Hope that helps!

I think anybody can learn anything. you might not get the accent at this age, but that also depends on your ability.
