I am looking for a phrase including the word
"aliño"
which is a reference to creating a kind of complicated plot or situation...

"Aliño" is a word used in cooking. I can't see the link with a complicated plot or situation. It would have to be very metaphorical and even so I doesn't make much sense.

I am reminded by a friend of mine from Madrid that this comes out of bullfighting circles and is actually hacer "una faena de aliño". It is, of course, metaphorical and refers to someone who "marinates" a plot or a scheme or an idea -- probably, again metaphorically, acidically....

Very interesting, I had never heard this expression before, as you can see neither did dunia.

but it is used both in football and in bullfights.

I am not sure if it means "very easy" or very soft or something. Will keep looking. Interesting question...one never stops learning.

it is coming back to me. it is used something like a "culebrón" in Valencia when people keep feeding a story and making it kind of nasty. Not very easy or very soft. Rather something complicated and sort of soap operaish in its complexity

Una "faena de aliño" (que viene de la tauromaquia) es hacer "una faena", en tauromaquia imagino que sabes lo que es una "faena", para cubrir las apariencias.

En fútbol o en cualquier otra cosa es lo mismo: desempeñar un trabajo que tienes que hacer para cubrir las apariencias.

Te dejo a ti que lo traduzcas al inglés que a mí me da la risa.

No, Maruja was trying to say: faena de aliño: a bullfight just to cover the "appearances", so to speak. The bullfighter is trying to make the faena look good, but it really isn't a good bullfight.

In football it is used to describe a match which a "big" team plays with a small or weaker team only to "cubrir el expediente", only to gain some points but that's it, no special effort implied.

In this sense it has nothing to do with aliño: salad dressing.
