Mexico, a region with a great variety of tamales

In all of Latin America there are tamales, although they are known by other names. In Mexico in particular, tamal comes from the Nahuatl "tamalli" (meaning wrapped) and is said to be the country with the most variety of tamales in the world.

Tamal is a maize-based food, stuffed with various ingredients, wrapped and cooked in a package of vegetable leaves that can be corn or maize leaves, as well as banana leaves and even reeds, chilaca or papatla.

Only the first line of my post 'posted', I don't know what happened to it. I reposted it. I tried to delete this one but didn't see how to do it. Thanks. - Jack-OBrien, Mar 4, 2017

Ray, you could start a war with a question like that smile There are several Mexican families that come to our home every now and then, and since they know that I love tamales the wife will always make some for us. The neat thing is, these families are from different parts of Mexico and they each make their own favorite style. Fresh made tamales are incredibly delicious.

This place is the real deal Mexican Kitchen (being kinda suburban) as it does great Mexican food humbly.

No frills and fancy stuff - the tacos come on a tray - the flavours are tasty and elegant, the hibiscus water is delicious and the chilli sauces the real deal. You may get fancier places for Mexican (it can feel like you a in a Mexican roadside diner or something) but few Melbourne places have the chefs patting down some tamales a few feet from where you are eating!

We started by getting the day's Nacho like dish with chicken and tomato salsa - and it was good and gooey (juicy even by normal nacho standards) and then got Tuesday's offer of 3 Tacos for $12 - which proved great value for having a chicken, lentil and pork option. Very delish and all quite different - the lentils were cumin-ish and earthy & the pork was slightly smoked - so good tastes all round.

The Hibiscus water we had was also nice and it had chai seeds that gave the lovely pinkish drink texture...overall a great place for an authentic feed and has so many options I want to go back and try a few other things...one not to be missed!
