The idea is to find an English word (synonym –- antonym related to the word – P H O B I A (sustantivo) and then write a simple sentence in English and Spanish for that word.

Example:

Do you have a phobia? What is it? Is it irrational?

¿Tienes una fobia? Qué es? ¿Es irracional?

Pictures are a good idea.

This link might help you find some ideas.

She was walking down the street when suddenly she had a panic attack and sat down on the sidewalk and cried.

No tienen miedo, sólo ignorancia e intolerancia.

I've always found it very strange that we call those who don't like gays and lesbians 'homophobic'. They aren't scared, they're just ignorant and intolerant.

I laughed to myself a bit here, because it could be SO easy for a massive and controversial discussion to erupt around this question. I do agree with you though, it is odd that the word contains "-phobic". The English language. Go figure :) - 00ffada9, Nov 19, 2014
Indeed, perhaps it has something to do with people automatically fearing what they don't know or don't understand, anything that is 'other' is associated with the negative so that the 'self' by contrast can be positive.. - Suzanne_Romijnders, Nov 20, 2014
and as we all know fear can lead to resentment and that to hateful and unreasonable actions. Personally I find it ridiculous that so many countries still have anti-gay marriage laws. If you want to discuss maybe a pm would be better to avoid changing the - Suzanne_Romijnders, Nov 20, 2014

I was going to write about some other irrational fear, but when I saw this terrifying image, I couldn't resist posting it and mentioning coulrophobia, the fear of clowns.

My wife always laughs about my fear of ceramic dolls, because she knows that I do not think that they really kill people at night, but we don't have any in the house in spite of this.

The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself (and stairs and no smoking areas). FDR

or, lo unico de lo que nos deberiamos asustar es el miedo mismo :) - Joydeep_Singh, Nov 19, 2014
Gracias. There is another common English rendering, which is 'We have nothing to fear but fear itself', which was I guess what I was thinking of when I did my translation ;-) - Faldaesque, Nov 19, 2014
I think it works better in your first Spanish rendering (& maybe mine) because of the repetition of the word 'miedo'. Using 'asustar' then 'miedo' loses some of the impact of the original, I'd suggest... - Faldaesque, Nov 19, 2014
:) - ian-hill, Nov 19, 2014
Yeah I think some American guy might've said that..... - Suzanne_Romijnders, Nov 19, 2014
If you think so, then you can use "susto" in place of miedo ,,(in the second one, both are good) - Joydeep_Singh, Nov 19, 2014

Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering. I sense much fear in you...

My friend once got an anxiety attack so bad that he had to go to the hospital and arrived late at his half-sister's wedding which had worried him so.

Anatidaephobia is the fear that somehow, somewhere, a duck is watching you. - Urban Dictionary (so probably not a real word)

On New Year's Eve, my dog always flees inside with her tail between her legs to seek refuge with me, shaking under our blanket, the poor thing.

My neighbours are from the Greek Island of Lesbos,

they do not like to be called lesbians, are they homophobic?

Is this lesbian phobia?

Campaigners on the Greek island of Lesbos are to go to court in an attempt to stop a gay rights organisation from using the term "lesbian" .

The islanders say that if they are successful they may then start to fight the word lesbian internationally.

The issue boils down to who has the right to call themselves Lesbians.

Is it gay women, or the 100,000 people living on Greece's third biggest island - plus another 250,000 expatriates who originate from Lesbos?

The man spearheading the case, publisher Dimitris Lambrou, claims that international dominance of the word in its sexual context violates the human rights of the islanders, and disgraces them around the world.

He says it causes daily problems to the social life of Lesbos's inhabitants.

In a tall building some men see another man fall by the window. He's smiling & they say to him, why are you smiling while falling to your death ? He answers, it's not the falling but the landing...
