Sir Ian was in rare form the day he battled the Great Dragon of Death and Disease. But that's a story for another day.

To be in rare form means to outperform one's usual levels, to be at one's best etc. - Helado_eclectico, Sep 20, 2014
I only do that at weekends. :) - ian-hill, Sep 20, 2014
When I say someone was in rare form today, it is usually not a positive. Usually it means for me that they exceeded their usual level of snarky behavior. :D - bosquederoble, Sep 20, 2014
Lol, I guess the usage does vary. From what I know, the term can have both positive and negative connotations depending on how you say it (like "That was just great", for example). - Helado_eclectico, Sep 20, 2014
Yes, I just wanted to be sure any English users understood it could be either. It does not have to be a positive thing. And yes, that was just great, with an appropriate tone is frequently not a good thing either. - bosquederoble, Sep 20, 2014
English learners is what I meant to say. :( - bosquederoble, Sep 20, 2014
- 003e54f5, Sep 20, 2014

When he wanted to form a new league, the coach had to fill out a form for the city, and some of the questions that formed part of it, being written by a civil servant, were so maddening that he went into a temporary form of madness, and hurled a file cabinet across the room, which was not good form on his part, but he did demonstrate that he knew proper form for lifting and that he was in good form physically. When the police performed a blood analysis, it was shown that he had been taking too much testosterone.

In addition to trying to demonstrate a few uses of the word "form", it was a nice exercise to see how many of the preterit vs. imperfect choices I could get right. Especially with ser, that remains difficult for me. :) - bosquederoble, Sep 20, 2014
