As we learn question tags, they say that shalln't is not correct or used. Should't is the right negative modal for both, should and shall. For example: We shall learn more about this, shouldn't we? Not: We shall learn more about this, shalln't we?

Estudiando los question tags, nos dicen que shalln't ya no es usado o no es correcto. Shouldn't es la forma negativa correcta para ambos, should y shall. Por ejemplo: Deberíamos aprender más de esto, ¿Cierto? No: Deberíamos aprender más de esto, ¿Cierto (como shalln't)?

Por mi parte, como buen boliviano diría: Deberíamos aprender más de esto, ¿No vé?

Actually, 'shant' is also used instead of shouldn't. It can take the place of 'shall not'. Most people don't use it though, as the use of it has lessened because of slang and poor vocabulary. Which is disappointing, since it's a fun word. - Ghosthawk, Apr 1, 2014
The short version of "shall not" is "shan’t" and is used a lot. - ian-hill, Apr 1, 2014
I love the ¿No vé? - I heard it a lot in Bolivia. :) - ian-hill, Apr 1, 2014
I'm very confused with this "should" and "shall". - 00b5f6c6, Apr 1, 2014
Thou shallest not nake mistakes my boy. - annierats, Apr 1, 2014
@Lilium - Shouldn't is a word that basically just means something ought to be done but hasn't yet, and shall is a word that means something that hasn't yet been done is going to be done. It's in the future tense. - Ghosthawk, Apr 1, 2014
Shouldn't is the contraction for should not, in case you don't feel like writing both words, and shan't is the contraction for shall not. Hope that clears things up and didn't just confuse you more :) - Ghosthawk, Apr 1, 2014

Debería ver más televisón porque nunca sé de que la gente me está hablando cuando habla de las programas en TV que ha visto.

I should watch television more because I never know what people are on about when they talk about TV programs they have seen.

That's exactly what people want you to do. Watch more TV. Personally, I could't care less about the stupid decisions people are making nowadays. That's all you see on TV. Gossip about annoying people. Or sports. Please don't want more TV. Por favor. - Ghosthawk, Apr 1, 2014
Better: Debería ver más tele... :) - nelson_rafael, Apr 2, 2014

Ghost, I just feel I should take more interest, that's all. There are some good plays, series and films, but I forget to watch them. - annierats, Apr 2, 2014

  • Deberías tratar de hablar con John, porque creo que solo él te puede ayudar a resolver tu problema.

Para casarse ella debe verlo sexi, pero me parece que ella no está enamorada.

To get married she should feel him sexy, but it seems to me that she is not in love.

"If I should die before I wake" is a phrase that used to scare the crap out of me when I was little.

"Si yo moriría antes de me despierte Si muero antes de despertar" es un frase que realmente me asustó cuando era una niña.

Personally, I think parents who make their kids say this before bedtime should be charged with child abuse.

My father always says, "Do what you should do now, or you will regret later."

Original: Mi padre siempre dice, "Haga lo que debería hacer ahora, o lamentará más tarde."

Revised: Mi padre siempre dice, "Haga lo que debe hacer ahora, o lo lamentará más tarde."

Meanings and usages

“Should” expresses that some action is correct for someone. For example, You should get more sleep.

It expresses probability. For example, You should have reached the office by now. It expresses consequences and conditions. For example, Should he have any problems, I will be there to help.

It is used in place of “would,”used mainly with “we” and “I.” For example, I should like to meet her parents.

Expressing somebody’s views from the past about the future. For example, It was decided from the start that the school should be used to educate underprivileged students.

It is used to make harsh words more polite. For example, I should expect you to apologize now.

“Shall” means something that is intended to take place in the future. For example, He shall be the CEO of the company by next year. It expresses determination. For example, I shall overcome all the hindrances in my way.

It expresses certain laws and rules. For example, The government shall declare an emergency.

For formal writing, “shall” is used to express the future tense.

Summary:

1.“Shall” and “should” are both auxiliary verbs but have different usages and meanings.

2.“Should” in general English is used as a past tense of “shall” but the usage is

occasional. Independently, “should” is not used in the past tense.

3.“Shall” is used more in formal writing than “should.”
