Hi all,

Just ran into a short 2 word phrase I hadn't previously encountered. In the below sentence,

Por ello la temperatura de los filamentos ha ido descendiendo.

Do "por ello" and "por eso" mean the same thing? Or is there a difference I should know about?

Gracias!

Ello means "it". It's a holdover from when Spanish used to have 3 genders: masculine (él), feminine (ella) and neuter (ello).

Nowadays it's used, I believe, in mostly formal language to mean "it" when the pronoun represents an abstract idea or phrase.

It is a low falutin´ (actually, just old fashioned) way of saying ¨more elevated¨. Something we tend to associated cowboys from the old west saying. Fancy or refined. - rogspax, Dec 16, 2013
we say it too! Without cowboys.. - annierats, Dec 16, 2013
can you say it in a sentence - Rey_Mysterio, Dec 16, 2013
We say it, too! Mostly in a joking manne or to make fun of someone who is acting fancy. =] - AlyssaLTerry, Dec 16, 2013

Remember that:

that = eso ese esa, ello, aquel aquello aquella.

Ga Ga, Yuck. Was trying a handwriting recognition app. Either it's bad, or my penmanship is. Probably the latter. - rogspax, Dec 19, 2013

As far as I know they mean the same, with 'por ello' just being a bit more high-falutin'.

Thanks Kiwi. It was in a very technical article on the theory of operation of vacuum tubes, so that makes sense. Would you say it would sound strange in normal conversation? - rogspax, Dec 16, 2013
Yes. Both are the same. - DualG, Dec 16, 2013
