I believe he moved all of us towards a better future.

I hope we can reach that future.

Thanks Ian. Very eloquently said. - 0095ca4c, Dec 6, 2013
My sentiments exactly. Well said. Having lived under the apartheid regime as a "privileged" white person, I am ashamed of the legacy of apartheid, but proud of Nelson Mandela. I mourn him today and celebrate his triumph over hatred and racial prejudice - 00a50c57, Dec 6, 2013

My children saw him once. He came clear across the street to shake their hand. He made a lasting impression on them, by only taking a moment to acknowledge children. He told them to continue in their education. That moment was unforgettable. Thank you, Madiba.

He is and was one of the very few truly great leaders of all time - an inspiration who never put himself above his people.

RIP Mr. Mandela

I mourn his passing for his people .

But cannot help feeling that if all the fine words and inspirational thoughts

were channelled into " truly" helping those of his people that are still

living in deplorable conditions , then his passing would attain an even

greater significance .

I think you know more than most of us. Do you think he was a great leader or a great orator or both? - Jubilado, Dec 6, 2013
I feel that his powers of oratory were incredible , but I think that he left the scene too early to be called a great leader , maybe it was due to ill health , we do not know the true story there. - ray76, Dec 6, 2013
Thank you Ray, well said. - pmikan-pam, Dec 6, 2013

Nelson Mandela quote:

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."

We have lost a great man.

"What made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human," the president said in his late-night address. "We saw in him what we seek in ourselves."

RIP

He was unjustly punished for righteousness sake, and for that he deserves our respect. I was wondering today if he has ever crossed paths with Mohandas Ghandi another former denizen of apartheid.

Having been brought up in South Africa, I can say that I am ashamed of the legacy of apartheid, the iniquitous regime that discriminated against the majority black population. I am extremely proud of Nelson Mandela and his legacy. I mourn him today and celebrate his courageous fight against hatred and racial discrimination.
