The quick and dirty tip is to use "farther" for physical distance (it has the word "far" in it) and to use "further" for figurative or metaphorical distance. But in practice, hardly anyone other than us fanatics care about that distinction anymore, and very few people are likely to notice which one you use.

To my understanding, "farther" is a literal distance, whereas "further" is for things that aren't measured. http://www.grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/further-versus-farther.aspx
