Welcome to SpanishDict, mehi. Please use proper grammar here since we have English students, as well. Thanks! - SonrisaDelSol, Dec 3, 2011

Hi!

Both are forms of the verb "estar" is the present tense, indicative mood.

Tú estás -- this is the you familiar form. This is used for people younger than you and close friends and family.

Ustedes están -- this is the you plural form. This is used when saying "you all".

You are exactly right in your post --- one is singular, one is plural. Estás is singular, están is plural.

For example:

This is you, speaking to your best friend:

You (familiar) are very tired today -- (Tú) estás muy cansado hoy.

This is a teacher, speaking to his or her students collectively:

You (you all) are very tired today -- (Ustedes) están muy cansados hoy.

Not to add to the confusion or anything, but don't forget about usted está and vosotros estáis (if you are studying the Spain you all).
