"Gran" before the subject, "grande" after the subject. "Grandes" (plural) it could be used after and before of the subject.

Examples with gran:

Es una gran mujer y una buena trabajadora, merece la promoción. She is a great woman and a good worker, she deserve the promotion.

Eso sera un GRAN PROBLEMA, si te preguntan diras que nosotros no vimos nada. That will be a big trouble, If they asked you just say we don't saw anything.

Ha sido un GRAN JUEGO y los cardenales ganaron la serie mundial. It has been a great game and the Cardenals had won the world series.

Examples with GRANDE:

A: Es una mujer grande ¿no te parece? B: Si por supuesto, ella debe pesar 100 kilos por lo menos. A: She is a big woman ¿don't you think so? B: Of course, she must weight 200 pounds at least.

Eso será un problema grande, dejemos que otros lo solucionen... ...

That will be a big trouble. We would let other work it out.

El bateador es un hombre grande y fuerte seguro conecta un hit. The batter is a man big and strong, he will give a hit for sure.

You can note that when gran is used (as a descriptive adjective) before the subject it means great, when you use grande after the subject it means big or large.

Good examples! But, there are a few English errors such as: "if they asked you, just say we didn't* see* anything. But excellent example. Your english is very good; and you have a talent for explaining things clearly and thoroughly :) Thank you! - Vero314, Nov 7, 2011
Excellent Spanish explanation, I think, we can worry about the English another time, no importa! - annierats, Nov 7, 2011

Grande is the adjective.

Gran is the apócope of grande.

Before a singular noun you have to use gran.
