Thanks for helping out with feedback on the new lessons Paralee has posted in the reference section.

I hope you have seen this thread and have tested the

New Forma Lessons: Por y para

Paralee needs feedback on this:

We would love your feedback! Things to think about are:

  • pace of the lesson
  • number of examples
  • do you want more opportunities to participate/interact?

(make sure you watch all 3 before you answer this as the por vs para lesson has no interaction, but the past participle one has quite a bit)

  • anything else that strikes you, we'd love to hear!

Hola Heidi,

I think the new format is great. Paralee's explanation is very clear, especially pointing out that the difference is mainly based on indicating a "final" or a "on the way" situation. That really helps a lot. What I like best is the feedback you get when you made a mistake in the quiz.

However, in the quiz there are two sentences of which I would like to ask you to check again the feedback:

Mi hermano trabaja POR / PARA Microsoft. Para is marked wrong here as it should be POR because of exchange according to the feedback. But you could also consider Microsoft to be the final recipient of the work, and then PARA would be correct. Or am I wrong here?

Tuve que limpiar la cocina POR / PARA mi hermana porque ella es perezosa. Por is marked wrong here as it should be PARA because of exchange according to the feedback. However, from Paralee's earlier lesson on POR & PARA I learned that in case of "instead of " one should use "POR". In your reference section that is confirmed because the following sentence is mentioned:

•Fui al supermercado por mi madre porque ella estuvo enferma. (I went to the grocery store instead of my mother because she was sick.)

Isn't this the same kind of phrase?

Please, don't take me wrong. I don't think I know things better than you do. After all, I am only at intermediate level, but I do want to help to make SpanishDict even better than it already is.

I have also posted this message on your thread of May 24th which I just found - Ingeteacher, May 31, 2011
I would agree Inge, I would use para when working for a company but por if you worked for the cause of something (I work for the advancement of.) and the same with the 2nd example I would use 'por' tying in with the 'because' she's lazy - that's a cause. - Kiwi-Girl, May 31, 2011
trabajo para 'the company/boss', trabajo por 'who you're filling in for' - Kiwi-Girl, May 31, 2011
Thanks, Kiwi, everything clear now - Ingeteacher, Jun 1, 2011
thnsk inge for posting this, great feedback - 00494d19, Jun 1, 2011
I was thinking the same thing on the Para Microsoft... in my grammar book it uses para for when someone works for a company. - katydew, Oct 14, 2011

Great job guys!! Paralee was very clear and concise. I love the set-up and will use this tool. As far as mistakes, no I didn't notice anything that stood out. I do like the recap underneath the video of the concepts taught in the lesson. The comprehension questions at the end bring everything together. If you don't do well you can go back and review the lesson----you should do this anyway (review the lesson). I'm going to look at the other three lessons as soon as I can and will give feedback on them as well. Great job guys!!! wink
pace of the lesson----good number of examples---good job here!!
do you want more opportunities to participate/interact? The more opportunities for interaction you can give the better. I do know that there are times where it is not conducive to do so.....teaching is just like that sometimes.... Again, thank you so much for your time and work with this site!!!!! smile

I did the por and para lesson and really liked it. I noticed that it wasn't as 'polished' as I've become accustomed to on this site, but I didn't care. I just noticed. The lessons are great and I learned something new with the practice section. I pressed the Profs tests and did the por and para test on that and on the other one. On the Profs, there were so many blinky advertisements that I couldn't concentrate and got a headache after the first few. I pressed on and finished but I probably wouldn't do that again, since I just wanted to see how the test ended and scored.

I used the link to get to 'por & para'. How do I get to the other videos? - katydew, Oct 15, 2011
The far left of the white board has half of the first letters cut off on Past Participles. Also a mistake at 3:19 - tendio where it should say tendio. - katydew, Oct 15, 2011

If you're looking for suggestions I could sure use one on "get something/have something done red face

I particularly like the moving pen idea in these exercises.

The sound was slightly out of synch with Paralee's mouth on the last two but maybe that's just the net or my machine being a bit slow.

It's only when that happens that you realise that you do pay a lot of attention to the teachers lips to internalise the pronunciation when they're teaching a foreign language.

I just watched the beginning of the por and para and the 'que' 'quien' one just to get an idea of the format which I thought was great but I'm off to bed, so when I've watched them right through I'll definitely come back with details, besos :) - Kiwi-Girl, May 31, 2011

I love love love the new format!

Thank you very much Paralee and to everybody involved with the making.

I scored 38 out of 40 in the por vs. para quiz. I must admit I learned good from both the video and the written material. I really appreciate the explanations for correct or incorrect answers in that quiz. I will review that again until I score 100 percent.

I scored 38 of 40 in the relative pronouns topic. I was given a wrong answer where I believed to be correct. I think it may be an error. The sentence was:

El hombre ____________ (I answered que) salió es mi hermano.

The quiz suggested the use of quien, however the antecedent is not followed by a comma or a pronoun. Am I wrong? I also spotted a sentence where the word que followed an underline where the correct answer was que. We don't use que que, do we? It looks like the word que was not removed when the underline was put in. Human error?

I scored 27 of 27 on the past participles topic. Good practice I love these quizes. I would love to practice the irregular ones that way también. Por ejemplo, Yo fui leyendo

I understand these take time to put together and I can see that their has been a lot of work involved I am very much looking forward to more of these formats. They are really a lot of fun.

They are perfectly balanced. The lenghth of video, written material and number of questions. Nice work.

Otra vez,muchas gracias a Span¡shD!ct.com, Paralee y todos

                           Amor y paz smile

I've only went through two of the videos so far.

The past participles was good, although that is the subject that I have probably studied the most, I knew all the content, but I thought that the subject was very well laid out.

I have also watched the Por vs. Para video - I thought it was very good, and maybe the best explanation of the differences between the two that I have seen yet. This is one of those mistakes that I seem to repeat, but with the explanations given, I think that it did help me considerably....Not counting our chats, I haven't gotten these two mixed up on any of my posts since I watched the video!! smile

I will watch the Que and Quien next. I really hope they explain 'lo que' vs. 'que' as well....

I'm posting this again as I left it on the other thread.

I watched the por and para one just now. I thought it was excellently paced and very well thought out. You can tell Paralee writes a mean lesson plan! Not a wasted moment. The written "white board" style is very good and moves at the right speed embedding a diagrammatic image as well as the written text.

Great work well thought out! Thanks very much. grin

Will try to have a look at the others if I get time today.

The pace of the lessons is appropriate. The content isn't too much to take in at once, though for the relative pronouns I think perhaps you didn't need to only do que and quien. The speed is rather good too. In the former lessons it bothered me that there were so many pauses so that we could practice. I wanted to get through the lesson and then practice.

Students can obviously look up grammatical terms on their own, but I would like to see something like links at the bottom of the page to terms not directly related to the lesson but yet are used in the lesson. Terms such as predicative adjective.

As for participation I think this is adequate as well. The only thing I would add to it is maybe after completing the participatory aspect of the lesson you had a final option to do something like a "what does it mean" matching session to help expand vocabulary.
