How to change an active sentence into a passive

Subject Verb Object

The cat chased the mouse ACTIVE

The mouse was chased by the cat PASSIVE

  1. The object of the active sentence is placed at the beginning of the passive sentence.

The passive sentence always contains a To Be verb + the past participle of the verb in the active sentence.

The original subject in the active sentence is not needed but can be included.

Present simple

Active My wife kisses me

Passive I am kissed by my wife

Past simple

Active
My wife kissed me
Passive I was kissed by my wife

Modal

Active Everyone can enjoy this music

Passive This music can be enjoyed by everyone

Present Progressive

Active The man is building a house

Passive A house is being built by the man

Past Progressive

Active The King was building a castle

Passive A castle was being built by the King

Present perfect

Active The woman has made a dress

Passive A dress has been made by the woman

Past perfect

Active He had made a mistake

Passive A mistake had been made by him

Modal Perfect

Active A bomb might have killed them

Passive They might have been killed by a bomb

Future Simple

Active I will pass the exam

Passive The examwill be passed by me

Note: The passive for the Future Progressive and the Perfect Progressive forms are not used much.

The passive allows the writer or speaker to omit the active subject.

This is useful if we do not know who or what did something or we don't want to say who or what did something.

Passive sentences are often used in scientific and academic books.

Present Continuous is keeping is being kept

• The road is being kept in good repair.

Present Simple keep is kept

• The butter is kept in the fridge.

Present Progressive driving is being driven

• The car is being driven by Marco.

Present Perfect have read has been read

• The bible has been read.

Past Simple stole was stolen

• The painting was stolen.

Past Perfect had destroyed had been destroyed

• The castle had been destroyed.

Past Progressive was driving was being driven

• The car was being driven by Marco.

Future Simple will keep will be kept

• The money will be kept by the bank.

Present Conditional would keep would be kept

• The money would be kept by the bank.

Past Conditional would have kept would have been kept

• The money would have been kept by the bank.

Present Infinitive to keep to be kept

• The money is to be kept by the bank.

I'm not exactly sure what your question is, but sentences 1 and 2 (thought it should be "it has already been repaired") are in the passive voice.

  1. Ya fue reparado/Fue reparado ya.
  2. Ya ha sido reparado.

I thought the Ser + participle is avoided in Spanish? - dewclaw, Apr 27, 2011
You are right, it usually is. One would use the impersonal "se": Ya se lo arregló. "One already repaired it". But the OP asked (I think) for the literal passive voice translation. - Azabache, Apr 27, 2011
Excuse me, I meant "Ya se lo reparó". - Azabache, Apr 27, 2011

HOla andreu, voy a suponer que eres de habla hispana, por favor, rogamos que rellenes tu perfil, para que no haya ese tipo de dudas.

La pasiva en inglés se hace con el verbo ser:

The car is working. (it/already/repair) It has already been repaired.

They found the lost child. (he/bring back to his parents/last night)

Como tienes una indicación de tiempo, last night, debes usar past simplewink

That school is special. (only talented children/accept/there)

Presente.

I was not driving my car at 7.00 last night. (it/repair/then)

Como es pasado continuo, usa el mismo tiempo en pasiva...veamos lo que haces, yo te lo miro una vez hechowink

The car is working (working could be an adjective or a verb) Unlike Spanish, English uses the present participle as an adjective.

It was repaired already. It was already repaired.

It has been repaired already. It has already been repaired.

Both sentences are correct, but carry a different viewpoint from the present time.

It was already repaired just states that sometime in the past it has been repaired previously. No link to present time.

It has been repaired already. It has been repaired in the near past or sometime in the past and is still true in the present.

What is confusing is that you make it sound as if you are given this active voice sentence (the car is working) and are being told to say it in passive voice.

The sentence that you are saying in passive voice is (it/already/repair)

I don't know why you went to past tense.

The car is working.

It is already repaired is probably what is being asked for.

Mom to son: «Go do your homework».

Son: «It is already done.»

Muchas gracias a todos. Ahora tengo una duda:

I cannot find my bag. It.....(might/steal) at the restaurant but I am not certain. It might have been stolen ..... or It might be stolen....

Otro ejemplo que no entiendo:

The e-mail .....(not send) before the meeting so nobody arrived on time. The e-mail was not sent or The e-mail has not been sent question

Thank you. Acabo de terminar el ejercicio:

We can´t go into our classroom today. (It / paint) – It is being painted. The car is working. (It/already/repair) – It has already been repaired. We never got the letter. (it/must/send/to the wrong adress) – It must be sent to the wrong adress. She has written a new book. It/publish/next year) – It will be published next year. They found the lost child (he/bring/ back to his parents /last night). – He was brought back to his parents last night. That school is special. (Only talented children/accept/there) Only talented children are accepted there. He is alergic to many types of food. (he/not allow/milk products) – He is not allowed milk products. I was not driving my car at 7.00 last night. (it/repair/then) – It was being repaired then.

Es un ejercicio de transformación de Activa en Pasiva. Me pone este frase primero: The car is working. y luego tengo que transformar en pasiva: it/already/repair. Así es el ejercicio.Mi pregunta es ¿Cual es la respuesta correcta? confused

Hay mas: They found the lost child. (he/bring back to his parents/last night) That school is special. (only talented children/accept/there) I was not driving my car at 7.00 last night. (it/repair/then)
