I before E : is this as much a rule in Spanish as in English? Perhaps even more so? Are there any rules about this as in English, such as except after C?

Hahahaha... English has no real rules when it comes to spelling, or several thousand rules if you want to cover the basics. Spanish spelling rules require half a page, because the spelling is rather logical.

My advice: forget about English, and learn our systematic rules. Some people master them in minutes, while others need years. The faster you understand its logic, the quicker you'll learn the language.

In Spanish there is only ONE way to read a word; spelling doesn't matter. Our spelling, with its drawbacks, at least guarantees a correct pronunciation and stressing of a word.

Te only way to learn English spelling is through constant usage, even natives get confused. Even as a beginner I can see Spanish is more logical. - MaryMcc, Apr 6, 2011
seis is an example violating the English rule, depending on how you pronounce the diphthong. (It shouldn't fall under the "when sounding like A in neighbor and weigh.") - 0074b507, Apr 6, 2011
