A famous cardinal and writer, Juan de Torquemada, was born before the Inquisition. - lazarus1907, Apr 1, 2011

Juan de Torquemada is not Tomas de Torquemada, who was a champion of the Inquisition indeed. - 002067fe, Apr 1, 2011

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, the surname is related to the alternative version "Turrecremata", from "turre" (Spanish: "torre", tower) + "cremata" (Spanish: "cremada", cremated, incinerated, burnt). So you are likely to be right: it has to do with "quemada", but I do not know the story behind the surname.
