With an Irish keyboard layout the áéíóú can be done with the alt gr key.

If you are using Ubuntu (linux based operating system) you can add the Spanish keyboard layout by going to

System > Keyboard > Layout

(it puts a little icon on your panel which you click to switch between layouts)

Thank you PB. As you have figured out, this is a very common question. Not meaning to rain on your parade, we have many threads dedicated to this subject, starting with this one.

Gekkosan , I have a mac, is it worth changing it over to a Spanish keyboard, I must say I have no problems, except the inconvenience in using the , "press this punch that method" . Would you advise me please. - ray76, Mar 27, 2011

Also Pbkid it doesn't work on laptops without a designated number pad.

That only works for Windows with the MS character set, I'd like to think that most of us use Linux.

To use accents on Mac computers, hold down the Option key, and while holding it down, type the letter e; then release those keys and type the letter that you want the accent to appear on.

For the ñ, hold down the Option key while you type the n; release and type n again.

For inverted punctuation press and hold the option key then press either the "?" or the "!".

A whole lot easier to just switch the Mac keyboard configuration to Spanish ISO. Then you don't need to use option. Of course, if you don't have a Spanish keyboard, you need a few minutes to figure the keyboard layout, but why have it in English at all? - Gekkosan, Mar 27, 2011
