Just felt the need to clear up a small matter on "nation" and/or "nationality" ~

?Hongkonger is a nationality?

HongKonger is Chinese, not a nationality - Fidalgo

Under the principle of "one country, two systems" (just a principle, mind you), Hong Kong has a different political system from mainland China. Hong Kong's independent judiciary functions under the common law framework. The Basic Law of Hong Kong, its constitutional document, which stipulates that Hong Kong shall have a "high degree of autonomy" in all matters except foreign relations and military defense, governs its political system. As one of the world's leading international financial centers, Hong Kong has a major capitalist (mainland China is clearly communist) service economy characterized by low taxation and free trade, and the currency, Hong Kong dollar, is the ninth most traded currency in the world. Residents from mainland China do not have the right of abode in Hong Kong, nor are they allowed to enter the territory freely. (from Wikipedia)

Further, people from mainland China who travel/move to Hong Kong have to show their passports or obtain the necessary permission, per Hong Kong's immigration laws. (http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/hkvisas_9.htm)

Quick insertion: Definition of 'nationality' :the status of belonging to a particular nation, whether by birth or naturalization (from any reputable English dictionary)

In the 2010 edition of the World Competitiveness Yearbook, released on Wednesday by the Lausanne-based Institute for Management Development (IMD), Singapore and Hong Kong have both moved up one spot to take first and second place respectively as the world's most competitive nations. Both countries have now surpassed the U.S. for the first time in decades, knocking it into third place after its 16-year reign as No. 1. (http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1990224,00.html) Just wondering why such a lofty publication would mistakenly call Hong Kong a "nation?"

I agree they are Chinese by virtue of extraction (so maybe some are thinking "ethnicity" as opposed to "nationality") but their political status is Hong Konger; countless articles refer to Hong Kong as a "nation" no doubt on account of years of British influence and the desire on mainland China's part not to "rock the 'economic' boat" even though they certainly could overtake the region with little or no effort. Just thought this might show "another" side...thanks!

?Hongkonger is not a nationality?

so maybe some are thinking "ethnicity" as opposed to "nationality"

"Hong Konger" can not be an ethnicity, but it can be like "person from a province". Han Chinese is the most populous ethnicity in Hongkong.

HongKongers have Chinese citizenship.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Passport (traditional Chinese: ?????????) is an international travel document that is issued to permanent residents of Hong Kong who are citizens of the People's Republic of China

The eligibility criteria for application for a Hong Kong SAR passport include:

Chinese citizenship

Permanent residency in the Hong Kong SAR

A valid Hong Kong permanent identity card.

On the identification page, "Chinese" is the nationality

Identification page

?Travel document type: P (Passport)

?Code of Issuing State: CHN (People's Republic of China)

?Passport number

?Surname and Given Names: in Traditional Chinese and English

?Nationality: "CHINESE" (The nationality code is CHN as shown in the machine readable zone)

?Sex: denoted as "M" (male) or "F" (female)

?Place of birth: if born in China, name of province/autonomous region/municipality/SAR; if born outside China, name of country/region

?Dates of birth, issuance and expiry: displayed in the format DD-MMM-YY

?Authority (of issue): "IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT, HONG KONG SPECIAL ADMINISTRATIVE REGION" (in Traditional Chinese and English)

And remember that when Hongkong was controlled by the UK, it was an oversea territory. However, Hongkong has been an incorporated part of China since the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong from the UK to the People's Republic of China. And in 2047, the autonomous status of HongKong is going to be ended. Residents in Hongkong will be the same as residents in other provinces of China.

As a type of PRC passport, the code "CHN" (People's Republic of China) is used for both issuing state and nationality.

in contrast to British rule

It is worth noting that during the British colonial era, a Hong Kong British Dependent Territories Citizen passport used "HKG" as the code of the issuing state and "GBD" as the nationality code

Some pages in Western countries still prefer use "Hong Konger" as a nationality because of their point of views of colonial era and the opposition with the political system of mainland China.

Before being controlled by the British empire, Hongkong was always part of China. Thus, Hongkongers are real Chinese, not by virtue of extraction. There have been something different between residents in Hongkong and residents in mainland China but that was the colonial era when the British empire tried to seperate them. The transfer of sovereignty over Hongkong is the end of the colonial era in Hongkong. It is a Chinese land which was stolen by the British empire in the past.
