Question about conjunctions

If you have two independent clause that you use a conjunction to connect, would you change the form of "y" to "e" if there is a noun that begins with a vowel immediately following the conjunction.
Ej: Paula va a la escuela, "e" Irene sigue a ella a la escuela.

Yes you would, but only if the vowel has the same sound.
Y changes to E
and
O changes to U
