G A M E Direct & Indirect Objects
What are direct and indirect object pronouns?
Direct-object pronouns are those pronouns that represent the nouns directly acted upon by the verb.
DOP's: me=me, te=you (fam), lo=you, it (m/sing), him, la=you,it (f/sing), her, nos=us, los=you (m/pl), them, las=you (f/pl), them (f)
Indirect-object pronouns stand for the noun that is the recipient of the verb's action.
IOP's: me=me, te=you (fam), le=you,him,her, nos=us, les=you (pl), them
Example sentence:
I gave her the cat. Le di el gato.
The direct object of the verb is "the cat" (el gato), because it is what was given.
The indirect object is "her," (or le) because the person is the recipient of the giving.

In Spanish, unlike English, a noun can't be an indirect object;
In Spanish the indirect object pronoun must refer to a person or animal.
To avoid alliteration, when le or les as an indirect-object pronoun precedes the direct-object pronoun lo, los, la or las, se is used instead of le or les. Eg. Se lo daré, I will give it to him (or her or you).
When both direct-object and indirect-object pronouns are objects of the same verb, the indirect object comes before the direct object. Eg. Me lo dará, he will give it to me.
In some parts of Spain, le can substitute for lo as a direct object when it means "him" but not "it." Less commonly in some areas, les can substitute for los when referring to people.
Both direct- and indirect-object pronouns are typically placed before conjugated verbs, as in the above examples. They can be (but don't have to be) attached to infinitives and present participles: Le voy a escribir una carta and voy a escribirle una carta (I am going to write him a letter) are both correct.
When the meaning of the indirect object pronoun is somewhat ambiguous or you would like to add some emphasis a further clause can be added. Eg, Le escribí a ella.
NB: Unlike English, an indirect-object pronoun is required whenever a sentence includes an indirect object. Eg, I wrote to her. Le escribí a ella.
This is how the game works:
Give one sentence in Spanish and English which includes at least one noun.
Eg:
Given:
No voy a invitar a Amelia y Pedro a la fiesta. / Im not going to invite Amelia and Peter to the party.
Tell the next person what they should change it to:
Eg:
Change it to:
Im not going to invite them to the party.
Then the person following (after restating the given sentence) would show how to change it to include object pronouns:
Eg:
Changed to include object pronouns:
No les voy a invitar a la fiesta. / Im not going to invite them to the party.
Then they would
post one new sentence
in English and Spanish which includes at least one noun and
tell the next person what they should change it to say.
So let's play:
I'll start us off with:
Given:
Tengo la manzana. / I have the apple.
Change it to:
