May I suggest you go to the windows control panel and click on "Regional and Languages" there you will find that you can install a "Spanish" keyboard option that lets you create Spanish letters like É Á Ó an Ñ very quickly. the Ñ is the shifted : on my keyboard for example.

Hope this helps.

PS It is a very simple opeartion to switch between keyboards. Just rememebr to switch it back for your wife when you are finished grin

Hold the right Alt and the letter that you want at the same time. The numbers 0241 and left Alt held at the same time gives ñ or go to http://www.lingolex.com/spanishascii.htm

Personally, I like to use the "Character Map" in Windows.

Okay, I just tried the above methods in this answer box and these are my observations:

  1. The ASCII method works, but I cannot see even with practice how it would be faster than using the mouse to click the icon in the box below both this and the exercises. I can see it as being faster in the small translation box at the top, as my current method is to press it into the answer box and then copy and paste it to the translation box, which is slow (however if you type something without accents, it will usually give you what you are looking for as a drop down option, so I very rarely need to do this).
  2. The alt+'-key works nicely in "microsoft word", but does not seem to work in this box. I have not tried it in the exercises. In "word" it will be faster- so I am glad to have learned this.

As an aside, switching the keyboard would probably be the best solution, but my wife is already mad enough at me for trying to learn Spanish that I do not need to push her over the edge by making her keyboard not work right.

Therefore, I still find using the character box at the bottom the best option, even though I lose 1-2 seconds switching from the keyboard to the mouse (who needs a perfect score anyway).

May I am just not getting something.

If you install the US International keyboard the only thing that changes is how you use the apostrophe key. Other than that your wife can type normally. - 0074b507, Oct 6, 2010
Thanks, I might try that and see if she notices - Stadt, Oct 6, 2010
Works perfectly, once the computer is rebooted, I guess I will see if she notices- she's not good with computers so maybe she will just think the apostraphe key quit working - Stadt, Oct 6, 2010
Does this keyboard provide for a "ñ" as well (even if not it is a great improvement and doesn't seem to have any real interference except a slight delay in apostraphe and quotes showing up - Stadt, Oct 6, 2010
I use Right A L T+n key=ñ (notice that it is the Right A L T key) - 0074b507, Oct 6, 2010
Thanks, works perfectly - Stadt, Oct 6, 2010

hold the Alt key & type the numbers, then let the Alt key go

Alt & 164 = ñ

alt & 162 = ó

alt & 163 = ú

alt & 161 = í

alt & 160 = á

I just had to play with it to figure it out....
